Transporting Bling to Europe

Guys/Gals, the time has come for me to get engaged

I need your help.

I am leaving to Europe in 2 weeks with my girlfriend and am planning to propose to her there. I already have the ring and everything is planned out, I just need to get the ring past security @ the airport without her seeing it and ruining the surprise.

Here is the issue:

I am definitely taking the ring on board with me, in my carryon. My carryon will contain, beside all the fluids, liquids, and knives , my laptop, iPod, and a couple of other items (magazines, etc.). I want to put the ring in there (with the box) but am afraid that when it goes thru the Xray, the security agent will want to go thru my bag and take out the ring in front of my girl, thus ruining the surprise before we even get to Europe.

How do I get around this?

That won't happen. You can transport jewelry. It's not on the TSA list, therefore, they won't open bags for it when it pops up on the screen.

Not unless they thought its "suspecious" of a box...and asked you to open it...

Put the ring in your wallet and put the box in your checked bag.

Insure that ring, ASAP....it's really not as expensive as you think. My wife's $11K ring is insured with our homeowner's insurance company for $147 a year and it's included in the escrowed funds so I don't have to make separate payment on it every month. Maybe you can use that to gauge how expensive it would be to insure your fiancee's ring. They will replace it with zero deductible if it's lost, stolen, or fix it if it gets damaged or loses any diamonds.

+1, definitely get a rider on your home insurance or renters insurance to cover the ring.

I would go one step further and after security run to the bathroom and take it out of your wallet and place it securely back in your carry on. I would not want a ring in my wallet on an 8+ hour flight to Europe. Too many risks there.

Excellent advice. Calling insurance agent now.

Don't leave the ring in your carry-on while going through security. I've heard horror stories where people have had security agents steal jewelry (engagement rings) because they can see it through the x-ray screen.

Here is my take:

>Put the ring in the carry-on.
>Keep very close track of the bag as it goes through security
>Make sure the ring is insured and the policy is paid PRIOR to leaving
>Have your girl lube you up with butter from dinner tray and get a handjob mid-flight
>Put the ring in your wallet while in Europe but before you give it to her
>Just before you want to give her put it in the box.
>Give her the ring BEFORE you get the car.
>Make sure you bring her about 10 "Bridal Magazines"...that way, she can obsess over them, while you obsess over your car
>Plan a wicked-Sick Bachelor party

Don't leave it in a bag with your laptop or anything like that because airport security ( atleast in LAX ) make you open up your digital stuff and laptops and thoroughly search. I'm sure it would expose it. I would just say keep the ring in a concealed nonconspicuous thing such as your wallet like someone said. Your gf won't see it and you'll have a piece of mind as it is always with you! Good luck buddy with the proposal.

Negative on the "put it in a rubber idea" I'd hate to see him have a lower GI bleed and see him in a german emergency room.... glad to hear you're finally doing it...and good luck
