? New Service Information-aftermarket "tuning kits"

Looks relatively new - http://www.bmwtis.com/tsb/bulletins/...p/B122008g.htm

Had this handed to me at dealership today...Don't ask

Nothing groundbreaking, however some of the information is interesting.

im a little confused by the wording....
so if there is an actual damaged caused by the piggyback or reflash, they will not cover it under warranty but if there is NO damage incurred, warranty still stays intact?

Looks like it just backs up everything this forum already knows. It also looks like they could point to just about anything to avoid paying for repairs. I would imagine that if you have 29.2 and you have ever "plugged" anything in the car, it would be an automatic warranty voider.

For those of us (and I THINK Im one of them) how do you get them to NOT update the ECU when you go in for service? Do you have to literally bribe one of the mechanics or the service rep?? Aside from all this, I think its a shame that they sell the car based on 'no lag' then put it in after the fact...sounds like false advertising to me!

"With the integration level of E89X-08-03-530 or higher (introduced with Progman V29.02.00), any alteration to the TMAP sensor signal ("piggyback box") is detected by setting the DME fault code 2D18 ("Manipulation protection, air mass signal plausibility"). In such a case, the maximum engine torque cannot exceed 400Nm."

Would Jeff@eurobahn like to comment? Thanks!

So if I am reading this right program 29.02 and/or DME v81 limit torque to 400 NM = 294.8 ft/lb torque. I assume this is at the wheels. If thats the case how can you tune that? All the tunes, even JB1 exceed that figure.

Actually its perfectly normal. TSB's of this kind are not unusual, I have seen them for the entire time I have been doing software tuning on European cars. When we first started tuning the E46 M3's and removing the speed limiters they came out with a TSB for that.

When we started doing our stage II software and pulley upgrades on the Sl55's Mercedes had all sorts of TSB's regarding manifold pressure and rubber hose leaks etc.

The manufacturers have to protect themselves as best they can from having to make warranty repairs for things that were caused not by a design flaw or malfunction but as a direct result of tampering with the car in a way that the vehicle was not designed to deal with.

I'm sorry guys, but this is gonna go nowhere fast.
This SIB states the obvious.

If there is something wrong with your car, you have a tune and leave the tune in the car when you go in for service then your warranty will be voided.

If this SIB worries you, then:

A--Take the tune out of your car before going in for service
B--Do not put a tune on your car

Use common sense people!
