Question Besides turbo, what makes e92 engine different from e90?

I know its got the bi-turbo and split-dual exhaust... but what else makes the two different from each other. WHat does the e92 have that e90 doesnt? and how can I.. a 330i, get the near close performance as that e92??

e90 e92
255hp vs 300hp
220ft/lb torque 300ft/lb torque

what else???

i think if i got atleast 270lb/ft of torque ill be good..

twin turbo, the placement of the fuel injectors, just a totally different engine overall! i believe next year the sedans will be housing the new 335 engines. your only bet to getting more power would be either ecu upgrade or forced induction. the coupe itself can not be compared to the sedan simply because they are not the same, there was an article in a mag that said not one body panel is similar to the coupe so its not just the engine, its everything from suspension to materials

The engine block is aluminium rather than magnesium casing, due to the increased strength requirement of the high compression (turbo).

Not a new engine per se, since it uses the same basic components; it is a derivative of the N52 engine, adapted for turbo and DI.

actually... it's a new engine.

Different block design and material, no valvetronic, direct injection with piezo-electric fuel injectors running almost 3000 psi... it's the N54. a new, different engine than the N52. if it was just modified, it would have a different designation, like when vanos was first added to the M52, it became the M52TU. We don't use TU anymore, but it would be something like N52V2HO. but it's not. It's N54.

Gah, please stop this! E92 is the coupe. It's made with many different engines. E90 is the sedan. It comes with an even larger selection of engines, including the twin-turbo 335i.

PLEASE everyone, stop referring to the 335i engine as "E92". It's just WRONG!

[Steps off soap box]

(And yes, I know 335i isn't the real engine name. But it sure beats calling it E92!)

The 335i engine are the same in both the e90 and e92.

But here in Europe the 330i engine is not the same, in e90 and e91 it has 258hp, but in the e92 it has 272hp.

Here are some of the engine options available for each model:

E90: 316i, 318i, 318d, 320i, 320si, 320d, 323i, 325i, 330i, 330d, 335i, 335d
E91: 320i, 320d, 323i, 325i, 330i, 330d, 335i, 335d
E92: 325i, 330i, 330d, 335i, 335d

...and this is not even a complete list.

Now do you understand why it's a bad idea to talk about "the E92 engine"?

OK, here's the different e90, e91 and e92 options in Norway and in most of Europe, beside the 316i and 320d LE (150hp insteed of 163hp, less tax with 150hp)

The 'new' valvetronic 330i engine has a 2996cc displacement as the 335i biturbo engine has a 2979cc displacement. The same as the 'old' E46 330i (M54)engine:
http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/3223/bmw-330i.html

"The most obvious difference between the base 330i and 328i is the additional $590 that buys you six 496.5cc cylinders instead of six 465.5cc cylinders. The blip in displacement is courtesy of a stroke increase of 5.6 millimeters to 89.6mm."

84mm x 89.6mm is the 335i bore x stroke per cylinder....

Can someone inform me if that is the same 'old' E46 3 litre engine, but now with direct injection and 2 turbos etc? I recall reading it's the 'same' in its base specs. ????

The N54B30 and the old M54B30 share the same (all aluminum with cast iron cylinder liners) engine block.

As others have chimed in....a better way of putting the question is N52B30 vs N54B30 engines, what are the differences?
