Opinions on 2007 Audi S6

Contemplating this as a next car. I want to purchase. My priorities are changing. I can only have one car and the m3 is not cutting it for skiing, biking, hockey equipment, or bad weather (yes I have dedicated snows). Think the S6 would be worth a look. Aside from bad gas mileage I think it may fit the bill. I would def look at at 550i but the body style is changing. I also think the S6 is more exclusive and has slightly better performance.

I'm at a point in my life where I doubt I'll be going to the track, and am willing to sacrifice some performance for utility and space.

FYI, I plan to buy in about a year. The new A6 is to come out in 2012. With new S6 to follow prob a year later.

Pros for the s6:
- V10
- Nice interior/ comfortable
- 4wd
- exclusive
- full size spare tire

cons for the S6:
- out of warranty work on a v10? (can get extended warranty)
- only comes with automatic trans
- i will be driving an audi

Thoughts?

Or maybe someone can suggest a different car. Want to spend around $45k. Don't really want an SUV since I will want a sporty car if I am to only own/insure/gas one car.

I'm young (26) and dont want to carry two cars. I also am unsure of my living situation (want to buy soon, not sure if I will have several parking spaces), and the m3 goes back on lease. I recently crashed it (thankfully ok) and will return it. I also cant haul guests easily. An SUV for 12k would be a Jeep and they suck on the highway and aren't comfortable.

What price are second hand S8s of the same year?

If the price isn't much different I would up for it instead, it's more economical, has more performance, even more exclusive and better finished. The only fly in the ointment in it's alloy body which when hit requires professional repair beyond most normal bodyshops.

Did you consider this option?

I was actually interested in what you thought, Footie.

Looks like the S8's will be at least $60k, with a nice example being $65k. Also, I think it may be a tad big as I have only ever owned 3 series cars my entire life. They are sick rides though.

Thanks for valuing my opinion.

Ok, well I agree $15-20k is a big jump so lets discuss the merits of the S6 then. It doesn't quite have the go of the M5 but on more than one occasion it has beat it overall in group test and in one of the US mags beat it on the track as well so it's a decent performer in it's own right. It's got a lovely interior and the fit & finish is top class. The engine has a superior note than the M5, you can hear that Lambo heritage with every rev and while it isn't nearly as light or chunkable as a 3 series it does have a solid feel that only a big car does and for it big car it hides it weight rather well.

May I ask if you have driven one of these 2007 examples yet? If not may I suggest going to your local Audi dealer to see if they have a new one to test drive, would give you a good yardstick to know what to expect and if these examples you are considering drive as well.

I have yet to drive this car, but I suspect that it will be good enough. I would consider an M5 but I believe they will be a little more money ($60k for a good one) and look dated very soon.

I also much prefer the looks and interior of the S6 to the outgoing 5. Too bad this car doesn't come in manual.

Used M5s are cheaper than that dude. You can get an 06 with around 50k miles for $35,000. I'd rather get the M5. The Audi is looking dated too.

50k miles is too high. Also, I much prefer the interior appointments in the audi much more than the current 5.

Also, it isn't snow capable and I don't wanna deal with snow tires and 2wd.

Well that isn't here in the United States. I stand corrected, that is the new platform. Not sure when it will be here though.

I'm having trouble finding any resources on the A6 platform on Audiworld or Audizine. Don't people tune these cars?

I have driven the S6, and they are a very fine all rounder. I had my S4 for 7 years and I LOVED that car. It did everything well. My M3 is more focused but I have all the problems you describe. If you like the S6, you really can't go wrong. Just make sure you get the warranty.

I must admit the Alpina products appeal to me far more than M products do. Their are probably close in character to that of an AMG or an S model Audi.

0-60 in 5.1

thats your concern and dont forget how much brake pads and an oil change will cost on an "S" model. Unless you have hook ups then your cool. Theirs nothing special about those cars except for 1 thing. Which is they are very rare and no has them.

For instance in LA, I have a higher chance of seeing a Ferrari Scudera then an RS4. Believe me lol
