New here! Thinkin slowly FBO. Opinions?

Got a 11 335i n55 auto tran. All stock right now. Had it about a year and wanted to enjoy the car for the machine it is and enjoy my first Bimmer! Got 60k on it Thinking of SLOWLY going fbo but no mechanic background at all. Sooo piece by piece which do you think is the best way to go about it...not gonna be track car or anything just want to feel the power when I punch it. I was thinking DP and BMS intake first. Then jb4. Then fmic and exhaust last. Idk. Is that reasonable or complete shit lol

Jb4 first then mods is the route I would take ! Tune in my experience before everything is needed to be your first mod! Welcome and happy modding !

+1

I did it completely backwards and got almost all my FBO mods before getting a tune but if I could do it over knowing what I know now I would start with JB4 and go from there.

Think of your mods as supplemental to the tune. You can go FBO and see some improvement in certain aspects of your ride, but as long as you are running under stock conditions and parameters you won't be using your mods to their full potential.

Oh and I'm sure you've heard this before at some point but be ready to replace all your basics like coils, plugs, etc in order to keep up with the power demands of the tune.

You'll notice there are a lot of threads where people start to get CEL and codes popping up after installing a tune. Your basic maintenance items will wear faster so just make sure you follow a maintenance schedule with mileages that take in to account your mods/tune.

I'd highly recommend you do some basic replacements to parts that are known to be issues before you begin to mod.

Get the FMIC first, heat is the enemy of these cars. Without it you may end up blowing up your engine.

Get an aftermarket Chargepipe, the stock one is crap and will blow eventually once you start adding a higher tune.

Get you a GoFastBit Diverter Valve so that your turbo will hold boost better and not be a cheapy plastic model they have now that is prone to breaking at some point.

Once you got all that then go JB4, then DPs and performance exhaust (for a deeper sound than stock).

Sure have heard all that and I was planning on that first step before anything. It's almost that time on the schedule so might as well knock it out and not have to worry as much. Thanks! and the question arose from wondering should I upgrade the hardware to be able to handle what the software can do or vice versa.

Thanks man. For sure the charge pipe from what I've seen. Idk why that's not on most basic fbo lists and the fmic was really the one I was wondering about. Like if I'm gonna be running normal maps most of the time (80%ish), I couldn't decide if it was worth that investment you know? But you do make sense with the heat being the enemy

That's kinda the order I was thinking with the hardware first to be able to handle the software but everyone is making me think twice. And idk why I put the intake so high up. Maybe that noob mentality hahaha

If i was to do it in multiple steps thats what i would do

step 1 : JB4
Step 2: downpipes + charge pipe
step 3: intercooler
step 4: Inlets or DCI

I started my mod journey about 12 months ago and it has been totally worth it.
Both in terms of the increased performance and the satisfaction of learning about your car and making it unique.... From my experience you can pursue performance mods (tunes, intakes etc) and/or appearance mods (side skirts, tail lights etc).... If you want to go totally performance and build a sleeper I suggest the following (assuming a 335i)

1. Tune (JB4, MHD, Cobb etc)
2. Charge pipe and BOV or DVs
3. Down pipes
4. FMIC
5. Dual Cone Intakes
6. Turbo upgrade (RBs, Hexon, Pures etc)

Should put down at least 400 Kws with these mods

If you want to change the look of your car, I suggest

1. M3 or Msport front bumper, side skirts and rear bumper with diffuser
2. New rims and wheel spacers
3. CF mirror caps (lol)
4. Window tint
5. LCI tail lights
6. Coilovers or lowering springs (for a better stance)

Do some reading there are heaps of great threads and lots of people very happy to help out

Feel free to check out my build thread for ideas

I really love the look of your car and that color is just so nice with your entire set up.

Don't do it. Down hill slope. I got my car in the summer and said I would slowly go to FBO. Here I am 8 months later thinking about getting a pure stage 2 with stage 2 lpfp and tbi...

Just kidding. Kind of, it is a huge difference going FBO from stock but no regrets.

I didn't go jb4 but the build process is the same. I did charge pipe first with my cobb and then from there I did the FMIC. I got my DP last and shortly after got the car protuned.

You can definitely do JB4, CP, DCI and FMIC by yourself following a DIY. You might also be able to do DP yourself too since you don't have xdrive meaning the subframe doesn't need to be dropped.

Don't forget to do the suspension stuff too so you can properly handle the power.

Guys don't forget he has an N55, not an N54.

Get the CP and JB4 at the same time. Get the flex fuel wires as well if you want to run E20-30. I'd get the FMIC and DP next. Once you've done that, Pure Inlet, intake, and GFB DV+ is great add ons as well as Fuel It Stage 2 LPFP(can run higher E85 with it). For power that's all you'll need.

For bigger power, Pure Stage 2 turbo(or Vargas kinda cheap right now), N20 TMAP, and a TBI will be needed.

Good luck.

I can only speak from what I have; but I can say first hand that I love my setup. Enough kick and sound to keep me smiling yet very reliable.
- Cobb Stage 1 Aggressive
- Charge Pipe
- M Performance Exhaust
- Alpina TCU Flash

Enjoy!
