Lease vs. Buy Poll: Which Did You Do?

I've never considered leasing, but I would like to trade my car after I've owned it for three to five years. Therefore, leasing seems like it might be the way to go.

How many of you purchased or leased your 3 series?

Leased because I was very concerned coming from Hondas about the reliability of a German car and also living in South Florida where no one knows how to drive, getting into an accident and being stuck trying to sell a car without a clean carfax.
I've been lucky, I have no mechanical issues and no accidents after a year. Knock on wood.
It is also nice knowing that I can trade up for the 335 if I choose to in a couple years as long as I get a steady income and I feel I can afford it.

If you are self-employed then a lease is definitely the best way to go.

With as often as BMW updates their vehicles, including the engines it is highly likely that I will lease my next BMW.

I'm self employed so leasing is better for me. Plus I figured in 3 years I'll want a change anyway and if I bought it then I'd have to justify another car, this way I have to get another car

For my daily drivers I buy the cars. For my BMWs I always lease. I like switching cars every 4-6 months so leasing is my best option. I generally like to pick up leases of those who can no longer afford a car they just got into and take it off their hands. This way they absorb the initial hit. Then after a few months of driving it I will put it back on the market and release it to someone else. I also avoid paying personal property taxes on the leased vehicle due to a loophole in my county!

I don't like to lease because when the lease is over they treat you like every little nick or small door ding is a crime against humanity. I buy, and trade every 5-7 years. And drive like everyday is my last!

I paid cash.

I plan on keeping it 10 years.

I only put about 6,000 mikes per year on a car.

I leased. My reasons...

I knew I'd want to upgrade in the future to a 335 or E90 M3 if they make it.
I didn't want to put down a lot of change to get a reasonable payment.
By doing so I can continue to save/spend/do whatever I please with my $$.
I could have done financing if I wanted but didn't want to feel completely tied into a car.

Thumbs-up to all three of the points you made.

My income drives my decision on what car to buy, keyword being buy. If all I could afford were a Honda Civic, then that's what I'd buy. I would never choose a 335, and then figure out how to pay for it.

Financed my 330i.

I've put 12k miles on in 4 (yes 4) months. I'm sure this will slow a bit, but still I drive way to much for a lease. Unless I leased two cars at once; but I don't have the $$ to do that -- at least not two German/Japanese vehicles.

Plan to pay it off within 2-3 years, and keep it for 4-5.

thats what I thought before too, that buying is the best way... but after you factor in depreciation, repairs and all the bullsh!t, it comes out pretty close to the monthly rate... plus you can write it off from your business

so don't think just because people lease, that they can't afford it (I thought that before as well)

Holy moley! That's about the shortest car attention span I've seen.

lease. I like my lease payments and order to get the same payment I have to put 15-20000 down. At then end of the lease I have that money plus interest. I do not like to part with my money on something that depreciates so quickly. I would rather take that money and invest it in something that does not depreciate. Who cares about owning something that loses value. Just my opinion.
