Windscreen Scratch
Seems my luck doesnt end.
While clearing the ice of the car the other day seems I have managed to put a nice scratch in the windscreen, about 4 inch on passenger side by the endge of the wiper sweep reach. ANy ideas if there is any rubbing compounds that can be used to at least reduce the appearence of it. thanks

I've seen some windscreen scratch repair kits about, not sure how effective they are though.

you would think windscreen glass be designed to withstand an ice scraper especially from a company where winters are tougher then ours. I swear the glass is thinner on e90 then e46

I had to have a new screen in mine - parked in an underground carpark for a week & a drip from a waterpipe above put limescale all down it which I promptly turned into scratches when I tried to get it off... My insurers used National Windscreens who with no argument got an official screen - no additional costs etc...

Its not possible to scratch glass with a plastic scraper!
There must have been either a metal part, or some grit or similar got caught under the edge of the scraper. |

It'll be some grit on there somewhere that did it. I did the same to the drivers window of my wife's then new (to us!) Golf Plus last summer - I cleaned off a seagull poo in Cornwall and made a right mess of the glass, you don't expect glass to scratch but of course seagull poo has sand in it...
You can buy kits, I googled "car glass repair" and various things like that and bought a kit from Ebay but have not yet used it. I can't see it removing it entirely but any improvement is worth the low cost of the kit. |

Think yourself lucky. Many years ago, I picked up a handful of snow in freezing conditions to clean the screen. The snow had grit in it and I scratched the entire screen.

My entire screen is covered in tiny spots that will not clean off, and I also managed to scratch it slightly with aggressive scraping of ice .
I have bought a kit which contains propper glass polish and a drill pad plus instructions from ebay (there are quite a few on there). I have not tried it yet as I am waiting for the weather to improve. If this does not work then it will have to be a new screen through insurance... |

BUT seriously...this is why we have high premiums.. To the OP - I have heard people get good results with a dremel tool and the rubber polishing attachments to do an isolated repair to the scratch rather than a massive section. If you are pretty handy and have the kit it might be worth a go. Might need proper diamond cut glass polish stuff rather than a normal glass polishing compound but I don't know how hard the screens are on BMWs. |

I've done this to my wind screen and alittle to my drivers window.
Drivers window I will live with but I'm afriad a new windscreen is the way I will have togo. Will try to insist on a new BMW screen. The amount of scratchs on my windscreen would make a repair very time consuming and from what i've read its not got a great success rate. This was all caused by some grit getting into my couple of year old ice scraper. |

You could try glasstec - website is glasstecauto.co.uk. THey will polish out light scratches ie you cannot feel it with your fingernail. I have used Paul and it is cheaper than having a new screen and you do not disturb the bondinding on your existing. screen.
i have no connections with this company other than being a satisfied customer albeit a couple of years ago. |
