Want to get wider 17" tires, need help.

Hi all,

I'm a first time BMW owner. Just recently got a 2011 335i Xdrive w/ 17" wheels (Type 160) that came with Conti RFT's 225/45. I gotta dump these RFT's. Is it possible to get wider tires for these 17" wheels? What's a good tire size to upgrade to? I'm also considering getting Pilot Sport A/S 3 for spring/summer/fall and then a set of winter tires for the Chicago winters.

Thanks for any help you guys can give.

Tom

Those wheels are 8" wide so you could definitely go 235/45R17 (slightly taller sidewall) or most likely also 245/40R17 (slightly shorter sidewall).

I had the exact question a few days ago but no response. Bimmer74, switching to 235 results in a 1.399% difference based on the offset calculator, and switching to 245/40 results in -1.0% difference. Are those percentage differences so small that they are irrelevant fitment wise?

235/45R17 will definitely work without issues. A good number of members here go from 225/40R18 to 235/40R18 which is a similar overall wheel/tire diameter increase and I don't see why it wouldn't work on the 17" wheel. The 245/40R17 should work too but I am not sure I would go for that personally. The tire is quite wide for an 8" wheel so it will create a bit of a bulge which will increase the tire's tendency to roll during hard cornering.

Thanks for the help, bimmer74! I'll look into the 235/45 sizing.

I think you use the calculator the wrong way. You don't compare the new tyres to stock factory tyre size. You compare the planned front tyre size to rear tyre size, so if your front tyre is 235/45/17 and rear is 235/45/17 the difference is 0%.
