My BMW 335D has a problem , its very sluggish on pick up but after a while when the revs pick up to 3k revs the turbo kicks in and it pulls strong , looking at past posts it seems it could a problem with the actuator on the small turbo , ive also checked the vacum hoses and even though they are well in need of being replaced I cant find any splits or hoses off but Ive ordered a few metres of new hose to replace these , is there any way of me checking the actuator before I buy new ones from BMW , I disconnected the vacum hose near the engine bay that connects to the small turbo actuator and sucked up the hose and the actuator seemed like it was moving freely

Ive replaced all the Vacuum hoses but its still not fixed it , the actuator rods on the turbo move as ive watched them when the car was running and its revved up

One of my freinds has the same 335d as me , seeing as ive replaced the vacuum hoses with new would it be worth swapping his 2 pressure converters with mine to see if this is the problem , if it fixes it ill know its one of the pressure converters , if not it can only be the turbo actuators

Will this be the problem mate seeing as the actuator rods move either by hand or when I rev the engine

I had the exact same issue. Car had nothing when I floored it and then jumped forward at 3K rpm. I'm guessing the actuator on my smaller turbo was shot but the dealer changed both under warranty. I can dig up the paper work for it if you'd like.

Update Ive had the car in to a local BMW Indy , they did diagnosis and said it was one of the pressure converters , they replaced it with a new one but its still the same , he rang me up to say he is going to update the software to see if this fixes the problem , if not he said it must be a break in the wiring somewhere ?

Check the electronic vacuum controller, mine failed and turbos were under boost

Will do mate im going to ring the garage up first thing Monday morning so ill mention this , all Vacuum hoses have been replaced so its got to be Vacuum controller , pressure converter or Actuators or even worse case turbo but fingers crossed it wont be this.

Just had word back that its the small turbo at fault , dont really want to buy a new one , can anyone recommend anyone up in the north west U.K who can repair my turbo

Im really annoyed now , had car in as it was diagnosed with small turbo failing , just picked the car up and surprise surprise the car is exactly the same no power up to 3k revs , took the car back into the garage and there now saying the big turbo is at fault as they work together , think im being ripped off here , going round in circles and getting nowhere

This 'specialist' doesn't seem no know their arse from their elbow. Turbos rarely go on these cars - actuators are a common failure, any BMW garage worth its salt would know this. Take it to BMW and let them diagnose it. Or better yet - get a BMW insured warranty, wait a month and let them fix it. Job done.

Now that you mention it isn't it the big turbo from low RPM and a small turbo at high rpm?

No, it's quite the opposite.

Small turbo requires less exhaust gasses to run up, but runs out of puff, i.e. reaches max capacity early on. Large turbo is able to feed the engine with more high pressure air to develop more power, but takes longer to spool up (lag). Hence the need for both - small turbo delivers shove at low revs where there is not much coming from the exhaust, then large turbo takes over to give the big power figures once the revs have built up sufficiently.

+2. I wouldnt trust a shop to go further if they told me the small turbo is ok and the big turbo is the cause of the low RPM power loss

Sounds like you have one issue. Possibly a turbo. And they left something undone when they were checking stuff and now you have no power. Take it to a dealer. You get what you pay for in the automotive world.

So I am seeing speckles of oil on the bottom of the engine compartment underneath the turbo area...is this something I need to be alarmed at?
