Is a 2nd set of tires for winter necessary?
My plan is to not drive when it snows. Will summer tires be ok through the winter? Or do I need a second set of snow tires? Or just run all seasons all year? This is for RWD

I have non xdrive 355i and I have second set of winter tires, I don't recommend driving non xdrive with summer tires in winter, my main concerns is safety

Summer tires will not be ok through the winter, even when not on snow the summer tires can get hard and loss traction and braking...due to the soft rubber compound.
This is an excuse to buy a nice set of summer wheels and then throw winter tires on the stock rims. Works for me. No way I'd drive a rwd car with summer tires in the snow. Ever. Even a 1/2" dusting stay off the road. Seriously.

Only time i ever slipped in the snow was when i was caught in a snow storm unexpectedly before i had the chance to change out to my winter set from summer tires.
Just in case you get caught in one of these storms unexpectedly i would get snow tires or at least good all seasons

Seriously though, I have a dedicated set of 17's with Blizzaks for winter even on my iX. AWD with those tires pretty much removes the need for any concentrated driving even in deep snow...

I think I've decided on the Michelin a/s 3's. I'm sure I can do better for snow tires but I don't plan on driving in the snow anyway. It will handle the cold and still be a good summer tire . |

I have a dedicated summer set, and a winter set.
Summer tires: Michelin Pilot Super Sports Winter tires: Blizzak LM-32 I've been remounting them on my stock wheels, but I plan on getting summer wheels in the near future. |

Yes a 2nd set is necessary! I found that on my summer set my car would slide out side ways very hard. Once I switched over to winters tires my slipping was much better. If you aren't looking to drive in the snow I guess you can get any winter tire.

last winter was brutal, and there were some days when i absolutely had to drive in the snow, i was really impressed by the xdrive system plus i had <5000 miles on pirelli all season tires, if your car is rwd get straight up snow tires or dont drive, usually they clean up really fast, however i personally hate driving on a salty road more than driving in snow.

Nice snow mobile drGk. Yea I worry more about the salt too.
Op the Mitchell's are good, I bought a set of a/s 3's for my girls vw gli, she works in city too and also has public transit option. BTW. If order from tire rack , you get a $70 rebate card

Damn the a/s 3's might not fit my wheels. My tire sizes are 225/35/19 and 255/30/19. They don't seem to carry these sizes for this tire. Are there any other sizes that would fit?
