I wash my engine bay every once in a while. I always cover up my alternator and any exposed electrical connections. It's probably overkill, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

The correct way to do it here in Ca. is to park on grass or some other material that won't run into the storm drains. Where I live the storm drains go to the S.F. Bay. Nasty stuff off the engine, not good going into the bay.

Thanks @mashimarho for sending this, don't know how I missed it lol...
Anyways guys that is my car and if done properly it is safe to do. Over the summer I do detailing as a side job to earn some extra modding cash. When you clean the engine bay like many have said you need to make sure to cover things like the alternator, any exposed wiring, and the intake with zip loc bags. For me I have a stett cold air intake so it's just alternator that gets covered. After that you are supposed to rinse it off with a hose (NOT A PRESSURE WASHER), you want to make sure that the water pressure is low so use a hose with no attachments. After that I spray on some all purpose cleaner and let it soak in then agitate it with brushes where need be. In the video I used regular car soap because I didn't have APC and it was just for the video's sake. Anyways after that I usually towel dry as much as I can then close the hood and start it up and let it run to dry itself off Edit: Also forgot you don't want to do this with a hot engine. Should be done in the shade with the engine cool

I noticed my car had a ton of white flakes on the engine cover underneath the vehicle. I started shampooing the engine bay with Head and Shoulders and the white flaking is gone! Go figure...

When I was young (19), I used to take my old '72 Ford Gran Torino to the local car wash (the do it yourself kind) and use he engine cleaner stuff and a gentle rinse. Did it all the time with a carburetor and distributor cap unprotected and never had a problem. (This was back in 1980 - I paid $800 for that car, and a good condition one today is probably over $15K)

^ Most self serve car washes these days do not like you cleaning your engine bay in the car wash. Reason being they usually recycle the water and they do not want your oil and stuff clogging their filtering systems. As above I use to go to self serve car washes with their pressurized cleaners and clean my engine, today they all have signs saying it not allowed.
Most modern cars do not leak oil like they use to and the only time I had to clean oil from my 335I is when the filter house gasket failed, most times I am just cleaning off road dirt. |
