kaigoss69, is it possible to use channels 7 & 8 from MS8 amp to run one sub? Is the term bi-amping? is it possible to do that with MS8?

Thanks

Yes but each channel would require one voice coil. Also, don't expect too much output from the sub driven by the MS –8 internal amp.

I have a single sub with one voice coil. But if i were to use channels 7 & 8 summed up to get more power to the SUB, would it be an issue for MS8?

I was going to choose 2 subs in my input selection and and use it bellow 70 @ 12db/oct and 70-120 @ 24db/oct for my under seat sub. 120 and above on all four doors.

As per your recommendation i was going to use 200 and above for doors, however since I don't have center i'm loosing my center imaging. so I had to keep it 120.

Any suggestions? BTW, i have a F30 with 4 door speakers and 2 under seat sub. I have added a 10" trunk sub.

Thanks

You can't do that so you can only use one channel. Anyway, there is no way you can adequately drive a decent sub woofer with 18 W or even 36 W. You need an aftermarket amp.

Kaigoss69, i took your advice and installed an external Amp for the Sub. I can definitely feel the difference.

I chose 2 subs during input selection @ 80hz 12db/oct (Channels 7 & 8). I know you mentioned 1 channel per voice coil. Since My external Sub amp required me to use both left and right channels, I decided to go this way. Is this the correct way?

One more question in regards to input selection. I have rear door speakers. When i try to choose rear instead of side, No selection is available, is this normal. It will allow me to select sides, but if i said none an choose rear, i get no available inputs.

Thanks

kaigoss69, I tried the trick you mentioned on your earlier post.

I did a 3 way front. Wow what a difference. Mid's are alive finally. No matter what I tried before my mid's were flat even with EQ. Your trick made a huge difference... only thing i did was bring the front lo (trunk sub) a few notches down using EQ.

Sub Amp Setup
LP @ 80
MS8 Setup
HP @ 20 24db/oct
LO/MID @ 80 12db/oct
MID/HI @ 200 24db/oct
Sides @ 200 24db/oct

You think I need to make any changes to the above settings? I'm running OEM speakers and under seat with trunk sub.

Since i'm using speaker level inputs from my NBT with only front L/R to MS8, should I fade the inputs to Front or just leave it at center?

Thanks

Good. If you're using MS-8 power for the underseats, I'd put the crossover slope at 24db/Oct. That way the woofers should play cleaner given the limited power.

Do you think i should get a 6 channel amp to get more power to the speakers, including under seat? what is the rating on those underseat speakers?

I am planning the upgrade the 4 door speakers with a coax 4" speakers in spring. I'm not sure if 18W is enough to drive them. OEM are loud with MS8 right now I just to 1/3 on my volume now.

Word of wisdom, don't use a coaxial speaker in the front doors. It will pull your soundstage down

Thank you. Good to know. I will go two way. Any recommendations? I have a F30 with 4" speakers (Little narrow on the depth to 52mm) and I dont have tweeters on my door. So i would have to get door sails to get OEM integration. What about BAVSound kits? or should i look for something else?

Thanks

What's your budget? Do you want something good, or something that will blow your socks off? What OEM system?

The start of something expensive always starts with these questions!

I remember my first ever post/thread, taibanl guided me so well! Then kaigoss. Both very helpful as always.

Something that's good. Under 450-500. I have NBT with MS8 and SUB Amp.

You are right. First was my NBT retrofit, then MS8 upgrade. Last weekend, my Sub and Sub amp upgrade. Now getting ready for all 4 speakers/tweeters... Looks like it never ends....

Only thing i'm worried is, by the time i'm done with speaker upgrades, I might also want more power to those speakers by added a 6ch amp. I wonder if MS8 amp is enough for those speakers.

A used set of Morel Hybrid Ovations would be ideal for your budget, if you're not opposed to buying used, and if you can find them!

If you can stand to stretch the budget a little bit more, then I would recommend to go the DIY route, which means buying single drivers from potentially different manufacturers. This will give you the best results, because you can buy what's best for each position.

For the midrange, I have two recommendations. the Morel MW-4 from the hybrid ovation set is an excellent midrange. I believe you can buy a pair new for around $350. The other one would be the audio frog GB40, which has just come on the market. Audio frog was founded recently by Andy Wehmeyer, the mastermind behind the MS-8. While I have not personally heard the GB40 mid range, I have read some reviews, and I have seen the specs, and I am convinced that this is a top notch mid range. It will no doubt be my next purchase. Both of these drivers you can crossed over very low, somewhere around 100 Hz. This is extremely beneficial for the front staging and the mid bass response.

For the tweeters you have a lot more options, and you can potentially get away with a very low investment. For example, the tweeters I am using now only cost $50 for both of them, and they are some of the best I have ever heard! they are the Vifa OT19 model. I highly recommend them.

If you are getting a six channel amplifier, you will not need any passive crossovers, and you can run all of the channels active.

That's probably more information than you wanted, LOL but I have gone through all different stages of upgrades with the audio in my car, and I speak from experience.

All my gear so far is used (NBT, CID, Touch Controller and MS8). Except the Sub Amp and Sub. I don't mind used as long as they are in good working order.

I don't think i can get the Morel's here for that price. Everything is expensive here in Canada. Which is why I was going to use coax for the door.

Infinity Reference 4" (REF-4002cfx). I installed these on a friends car, and they sounded good.

I will see next time I drive down to States, if I can get a pair of Morel's.

Do I need to reverse polarity of the under seat woofers? I was reading another post and someone mentioned they had to revers the polarity of the under seat.

Thanks

Please disregard my last post. I misunderstood what Andy was mentioning on DIYA.

I follow what he said and reversed the SUB polarity and more boost on the MID's and it seems even better than my last setup.

Thanks

With my set-up, I had the best results with the underseats reversed. The sub should be opposite polarity of the underseats when in the trunk, but same polarity as underseats when IB.

Underseat woofers: reverse
Trunk sub: normal
