I live in MA, one of the 7 SULEV states I believe, and I got an N52 (VA33) in my 328i sedan, I ordered my car but did not specify any engine type. Just wondering why engines are allocated randomly?

SULEV has longer warranties on certain emmissions related parts, I think I remember reading, 80k miles, no time limits, Covers things like cat converters (both of them).

All also recently read that you want to avoid SULEV engines if you plan on keeping your car for a long time... Reason is because the SULEV has different fuel pumps, senders, and sensors (one piece design) that will cost an 'arm and a leg' if they ever go bad...

Compared to what? The cheapo fuel pumps, senders and sensors that come with the N52? If your fuel pump goes after warranty, it's not exactly going to be cheap either way.

I was pretty specific when I ordered mine. I told my CA that I wanted my E90 built in Germany and with an N52KP engine (ULEV). He just clicked off the selections on his ordering screen and said, "No problem, done."

The N51 will have a few less ponies, due to the extra emission control parts - doubtful that the "butt" dyno could feel it.
yea, you're right. i made sure i requested the non-sulev engine as well. VIN # checks out already on the productions site.

Well, glad to see this thread is still alive. I'm happy to report that our new E90 will have the N52. Even though I am quite satisfied with the N51, but given the fact that the E90 will have Step and xDrive, I'm overjoyed that the N52 will be under the hood. I didn't request it since I'm in a CARB state and was just resigned to the fact that I would be getting another N51.

Wow, was odd to see this thread surface. E90Fleet has been gone for over a year...

And yes Steve, we know you live in a CARB state... you can't go two blocks without passing a bagel shop.

Sure you get the N52, but BMW keeps the clown nose and ash tray at the factory this time.

We know what they kept there last time >cough< springs >cough<

Don't know about the clown nose....on vehicles w/o ZPP, the rearview mirror dimmer would still be a knob to adjust manually.

It will be interesting to see if you notice any differences you can attribute to the engines between your old E92 with N51 and 6MT and the new E90 with N52 and 6AT. The tranny and gear ratio differences might make it hard to determine if the engines perform differently. Could you report back to us and let us know? Thanks.

2011 328i xDrive

Hey Guys,

Coming off from S4, I have 2011 328i xDrive Auto. Is this N52 or N51? Is there any chip mods for this model.
