Brake replacment
My front and rear break pads are almost due for change. Front one has about 3K left and rear about 4k. I am looking to replace the pads, rotors, and sensor. I figured the price would be very high if i decided to take it to the dealer so i will either do it my self or pay a buddy of mine who is a mechanic at a honda dealership to do it. He has changed my brakes for my nissan a few times and knows what he is doing.
What are the best brakes/rotors to buy online. I don't take the car on a track so i don't really need anything track crazy but would prefer it to be a very good quality brakes. First time changing the brakes on my BMW so i am not 100% sure what is best out there. by the way the car is 07 328xi sedan model thanks |

If your doing it yourself it doesn't have to be too expensive. It also can get cheaper if you don't want to go OEM, i got quoted from the dealer roughly $400ish for front pads rotors and sensors, that just for parts. I planned on doing it myself but i don't know how much they would charge to put them in. and i also have an 07 328xi

i did a little bit of research and it seems that i would be looking around $1000 or more for both front and back w. everything. That seems like throwing a lot of money away on brakes when it something that can be done by your self or w. help from someone who has more experience with it. I found that cool carbon brakes seem to be popular and good option. A package of front and back could be bought for around $230. Adding new rotors and sensors the total would be around $400+. Seems a lot better way to go then taking it to a dealer and getting ripped off.
here is the thread about cool carbon http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...+carbon+review |

thank you hugus.
I was thinking going more into aftermarket. Do you know anything about aftermarket products that are good. It seems everyone likes Hawk and Cool Carboon. Also the only thing that worries me is when i replace the sensor and restart the OPS should everything be working fine. I read a lot where people are having errors or the light are lit up in red & showing miles ---- will i be OK with replacing sensor and restarting OPS or is there something else that has to be done |

if you dont change rotors but only pads and sensor than make sure rotors are perfectly smooth and a meet minimum thickness with a digital caliper.Rotor has a minimum thickness spec stamped onto the hub in mm normally 18.4. I believe rotors start with 20mm Since the orginal rotors started with 20mm nominal, if you wear away 1mm of steel. Assuming that the replacement pads last about the same number of miles, you wll be down to 18.0mm(below the 18.4mm min). Might be prudent to change rotors even though technically speaking they are within spec.
also remember to bed in new pads. |

My dealership here in Oregon quoted about $1350 front and rear installed.
Tischer sells the OEM kit for $630. Bavarian Autosport sells there own brand in a kit for $430. Not sure how they compare to OEM tho. I will probably do a little more research on OEM vs off-brand and do it myself with a little help from a friend.

If you DIY pick up a digital rotor gauge and measure your rotors in a few spots each to see if they even need replacing, they cost $400 of your $600 brake job.
I am still on original rotors and on the 2nd set of rear pads. Also yes, change your brake sensor or you will get a car on lift ---- km/mi remaining error when you reset your CBS. |
