The AA run the speed awareness courses for Northumbria police and the speed is within the range where an awareness course is offered. It's therefore likely that the course will be an option.
The NIP will need to be returned and the course offered and booked within 6 weeks (from memory) of the offence. |

I hope so as the speeding was obviously unintentional and its so annoying when this sort of thing happens especially when you see so much atrocious and dangerous driving daily that goes totally unnoticed by the police.

As long as he hasn't had a previous speed awarness course in the last 3 years, as your title states another NIP?

Hopefully he will get a speed awareness course. Also i hope no driving angels come on here to blast him for being "dangerous" without knowing the facts, like they did to me
From memory, if the speed is close to the limit they should offer a course. Not sure if they would see 37 as close. Totally agree that there are dangerous drivers out there that put themselves and others at risk. There's a time and place for that sort of driving. I attended my course, but it wasnt a speed awareness course, it was a Whats Driving Us course. A poor attempt at using psychology and scare tactics. |

As above, I got an invite along with the NIP with options to either take up the course, contest it or get 3 points ? I chose to take up the course, I found it informative...

I live in Newcastle and got done for a 34 in 30 zone (it changes from 30 - 40 -30) right by BMW Fenham Barracks, I got offered the course and took it, on the course they told me the limit to offering the course was 35, anything over and it wouldnt have been on offer.
This was from the guy doing the course and there was noone else in the room who had exceeded 35, this was last year. So they might be unlucky. |

The 1st letter the police always send is a NIP - to establish who was the driver!
Once they have the drivers details, then they will either send the offer (if the speed was between the set thresholds for the course)! |

I did a SAC for 38 in a 30 zone, as long as you have not done one within 3 years they should offer it. 4 long hours of hearing how the old men are the best drivers and know more than anyone, that's what mine was like anyway.
Much the same as others have said really, yet I pro the SAC scheme as it saves taking a bullet for a little one off I think. I watch my speed these days like a hawk I have to say, I have just driven back today from the NE to the SW and if I got clocked a long way from home, I think it would be points for me, as really would not want to go to the other end of the country for a course.

But in the same envelope they send other paperwork, including the plead guilty by post form, so that if you ARE the driver in question you can send your licence and fine back with the signed NIP all in one go. IIRC the back of the NIP is the plead guilty by post bit? Where appropriate they will also send the SAC invite too at the same time. Always been that way with me. |

ACPO guidelines for a speed awareness course are 10% +2 miles over speed limit to 10% +9 miles over speed limit. In a 30 mile zone that would be 35-42. These are ACPO guidelines and it is up to each force to set its own limits. Also only offered if you haven't attended a speed awareness course within the last 3 years I believe but not sure about that last duration.
