It is a wear item, but the squeaking is from a poorly designed belt. The sib says to put a newly designed belt on.

Well..I went over 60k and the other poster went 80k miles. Hard to say defective at that mileage/time (5yrs) wouldn't you say?

If I didn't start squeaking until those mileages, then yes, I'd say it wasn't defective. Mine was squealing at 34k and they replaced it with a different belt according to the sib.

Good news is I got the new ac belt on wewt! Took a bit of trial and error but it requires three things.
Tools:
The belt removal tool by Leslie mentioned earlier, a ratchet with 3/8 drive. One 9mm Hex bit 3/8 drive and one 7mm hex socket bit.

Steps:
All you have to do is remove the bottom cover and attach Leslie tool as shown on the removal side.
Then turn the crank shaft by taking the 7mm hex socket and attach it to the hex sticking out on the AC pulley. Then turn clockwise till it comes off.
To place a new belt place the Leslie on the install side at the bottom of the crank pully.
Place the belt on the AC pulley and part way on the crank. Slide the Leslie tool up a bit until its tight enough that the belt looks like its about to go on.
After wards go up to the PS pump put the 9mm hex bit into the socket and turn the pump counter clockwise. Until the belt is fully on. Boom you're done.

Took a bit to figure out. But saved me 140$

I am in the process of buying a CPO 2011 335d and when I went to test drive it the squeal kicked in as soon as the AC compressor first engaged. This car has 44k on it but it was also not put on the road until July 2012 so there is another year of full warranty and maintenance as well as the extra 2 years CPO.
The salesman tried to tell me not to worry, it was under warranty. I was having none and it is in the shop before I take possession.
Much easier to get it fixed now than to fight for warranty repair.

Reviving this as our 2011 with 76k just started squealing. 2 questions:

1. Does SIB 64 08 11 ONLY cover cars under new car warranty, or will it also apply to CPO?
2. Per that SIB, regardless of whether it's covered, is the correct belt replacement p/n 11 28 7 520 177?

Note: Dealer wants $365 to replace the belt... Thanks!

CPO should cover it. Worst case...belt is only $15 or so. Someone will do it for much less if you don't want to.

Maybe try a different dealer. I'm in my third or fourth belt and they've all been covered under CPO...

I had belt replaced at same time AC seized and the vibration damper went, think they charged me 2 CPO deductibles (one for AC and one for pulley) leads me to believe belt was covered. I'll echo the "try another dealer".

For a $15 part and what seems like an under 30min DIY I'll just change it, but may try another dealer in the future. They are replacing the SCR tank now, so at least I'm getting that taken care of under CPO...

My belt started squeaking about a week before it failed. The continental belt is a $10.99 part at most places. Couldn't find removal tool, so just placed one edge of the belt on the pulley and turned the flywheel about 90 degrees. Done!

So there is no actual tensioner on ac belt right? At least I didn't see one. I just afraid there is gonna be too much tension with out adjusting it since this new belt is 5mm shorter.

Correct, it's a stretch belt so you will need to use a tool to install/remove the belt.

76k my car has a slight squeak on startup.

Planning on doing harmonic balancer w/ new belt and also thinking about belt tensioner while im down there but I havent heard of belt tensioner being replaced do the diesel engines?

Just thought i would bump this thread as i am new. Had the squelch on and off even before i got the car while i was test driving it at the dealer its squealed bad. I figure worn tensioner. So i read this forum and now i got the Lisle 59370 Stretch Belt Remover/Installer from orielly auto as they now price match with amazon. I highly recommend doing the job this way:

Get the tool and the right belt I got the dayco E040320 stretch belt. Get a 9mm 3/8 drive allen. By the way my old belt was the one that squeals and that part number is 64-55-7-793-608 that's BMW's number but also says contitech on the belt. Other numbers are EB004 and 4PK830 so stay away from all of those. Get dayco E040320 or continental. The continental part number is 4040325S but i have not tried that one.

Real simple:

1. Remove air snorkel above radiator fan, 3 screws and take it off, then disconnect the boost hose to the egr and move it out of the way to get access to the PS pully, also now you can easily see the belt below,
1.5 Get under the car and access the belt,
2. Get your 9mm allen and stick it in the center of the power steering pump. You will use this to turn the crank clockwise, no need to use any other points to turn crank.
3. Use Lisle tool to remove belt. I had found it will not come off all the way i had to push it from behind with a screwdriver pushing towards the front of the car and just pushing on the edge of the belt then it came off, the tool was at the very bottom of the balancer when i pushed it off,
4. Get new belt and install onto ac pulley first, install Lisle tool to install and turn crank counter clockwise from above, you will see the belt will line up and once it makes its rotation...BOOM its naps!!, jk its on,
5. Just reassemble everything and grab a beer, or a coffee.

That's all there is to it. I made the mistake of turning crank using balancer bolts and I thought they were 10mm hex, but really they are E12. So i barely started to round one with the 10mm hex before I stopped and was like wtf. So I grabbed my E12 and that works for clockwise, but then I made the mistake of using it to turn counter clockwise and I began to loosen the bolts...don't wanna do that so I stopped.

Finally I had to go buy a 9mm allen and its slightly loose in the PS bore but no problems turning crank either direction, may not be metric in there, but it was a piece of cake.
