Lack of 335i's up for sale?

Hey guys,

Had my car over 2 years now and looking to upgrade. Set myself a 30k budget but i want something that isn't going to cost an obscene amount to run and not too old, e.g. NOT a 911/m3 etc!

Undecided at the moment between 335i (facelift), 330d if want to be sensible (facelift) or a post 09 cayman S. Also a TT RS but i just don't think i could buy a TT even if it is sub 5 secs to 60.

My head is telling me to go for a well spec'd 11 plate 330d for c25k and continue saving so i can afford a new shape cayman S as a present to self on 25th birthday.

But my heart is telling me i need to get something fun and noisy to enjoy as i just don't enjoy driving anymore. I love the look of the new merc CLA but engines are shitty.

Swaying towards a cayman S > 335i but still want to compare.
Been having a look on autotrader, pistonheads, on here etc and can't seem to find any facelift 335i models around up for sale? Any ideas on why?

Also appreciate any opinions on what car you guys would go for in same position? Bare in mind i've ruled out car's like M3's, S5's etc as my offices are a fare trek away so anything under 25mpg avg doesn't work - i don't want to be putting that much money in to petrol!

What about a BMW M135i?

Not many of them either and holding value very well.

There's only 2/3 of those up too.. I haven't driven either yet but just from stats the performance difference is so minimal that if i was going to be sensible and get another diesel it doesn't make any sense to spend the extra $$ and get the 335.

Only thing i'd really be missing out on is the 335's 'dat ass'.

Not big on the looks of it to be honest mate. I looked at the 1M Coupe and would love one but my original budget i set was 25k, 30k i'll have to make a withdrawal from my poker accounts which i've decided i'm happy to do but if i go to 35 then i'll want to go to 40 etc..

135i?

How about a Z4 S35i or 370z?

Porsche 911 Carrera would be my choice. You can get early 997's for £25k and pick the right one and you won't lose much money. If you by a 11 plate 33x then with new model out you will lose a lot if you come to sell for your 25th present....

Your younger than 25, what are you doing looking at diesels? Get something that will put a smile on your face, there's always time to be sensible\practical later. A 335i is a perfect choice or as an alternative how about an Audi S5?

I'm envious of your budget! However, get yourself a car that you will enjoy driving every day and don't worry about your fuel costs.

C63 AMG
RS4
S3
Porsche

Will you be modifying the car at all? If so, definitely consider something with a turbo!

Look forward to an update on this in a few weeks/months when you get your new toy...

Running costs are too high mate, too thirsty + warranties, higher service costs etc - there are things i'd rather spend my money on than stopping to fill car up every 4 days

The depreciation of the 3er's was running through my mind to be honest which is why i was thinking the 1M/TT RS. When do the new model coupes come out?

Don't judge me insurance cost a crazy amount when i got my bloody 320d so didn't even look at i's.

Audi S5 is as thirsty as the m3's unfortunately otherwise i'd love one! Then again given the choice i'd go for the c63 over both but i do too many miles to want to be spending that much on petrol.

Too new, most newer models will be selling through BMW AUC, not many folks gonna sell a 2 or 3yo car still in warranty privately on autotrader all said, or have traded it in with an independant trader.

http://www.approved.bmw.co.uk/bmwuk/...adm-xx,00.html

A quick check shows 10 335i m-sport manual coupes up to 3 years old.

Lovely cars, but the running costs are way beyond a 335i.

Just got my LCI 335i yesterday. Check the neewbs post for picks. It has taken months to find a good one though. You're just going to have to keep yr ear to the ground and be prepared to travel for the right car.
Good luck!

LCI is barely 3 years old. Very few people sell their cars before the warranty period expires. Once LCI is 4 years old there will be hundreds.

911 997 will return around the same mpg as a 335i, and overall will be a much cheaper ownership experience, it won't depreciate anywhere near the rate of a 330d.

An 11 plate 330d at £25k will be worth around £10k trade in 3 years with say 60k miles on it, that £25k 911 you would still get £17k for.

335i will be out of warranty after 12 months and then cost you £70 a month for the full one, a Porshce warranty is 2 years buying used, or if you want to take it out again around £100 a month, so a bit more than the BMW one.

I would say get a new 330d m-sport on one of the £350 a month contract hire deals, you will loose more than that buying a 2.5 year old one.

For 30k you can almost get a brand new 330d or 335i! There is a lot of room for negotiating on options there too.

What's your 3 main buying priorities/criteria?

e.g. these were mine
1. practicality (4 doors and a decent boot)
2. performance/handling
3. running costs (depreciation included)

(don't know how I ended up in an e90 330i with those priorities!)

I ask rather than suggest anything because you mentioned quite a mixed bag in your initial post. I'm not a huge Audi fan but the TT RS certainly appeals if I had £25k to spend (are they within that budget already?). But a Cayman S would be impossible for me to ignore - my father-in-law has one and it fits the bit for me if I had the cash (and no baby, and more cash to run it...)
