my local indi has ran a diagnostic test and has said its coming up as a fault on the actuator on the turbo. he says its probably seized as its quite common

i have rang up bmw and they said they dont sell the actuator on its own and it comes with a turbo replacement? is this true?
i was hoping to source one and get the indi to fit?

It isn't true. I had both of mine replaced without having new turbos.

Maybe someone can confirm, it is #1 ? You could perhaps purchase this from an online stockist. I know some people buy their parts online but there should be no reason why your inidie can't request the part from BMW.

And the reason why there are 2 #01 parts is, the old pressure convertor has been discontinued for a slightly modified design. There was actually some guy posting this up a few days ago. He changed it and explained this.

this was benham bmw wolverhampton, the parts guy said they only come with a new turbo and not separate to buy. thanks for the link above i will give anneka off here a pm i think

out of 2 dealerships/parts dept i have visited both have been not very helpfull and one has been arrogant.

Unfortunately you get that with them.

You do tend to find that with some warranty work they have set procedures, they don't tend to strip a part and test it, they just replace the whole unit. This is what they might have been getting at.

Also, they don't like it when people come in and tell them what's wrong with the car or ask for specific parts.

But either way, quite a few people on here have had their actuators replaced without doing the whole turbo.

In a way i would have preferred they replaced the turbo because on mine there was a slight oil leak on the small feed pipe which could have affected the oil pressure and done damage to the turbo.

Yes, actuator just means converting energy into motion.

Check with your mechanic you have the right part. You might need the other pressure convertor too.

Replace both pressure converters, Turbo and EGR, and I assume the manifolds coming off, buy some braided VAC hoses and ask him to repalce them. Will cost all of a £10er to do.

I had an actuator go on my V70, didn't replace the turbo and all was fine for 40k miles until selling. Interesting link thanks for keeping us informed of progress and main stealer experience. I have used a diesel injection specialist in addition to info garages, there are a few of these people around. Sometimes people who work on tractors bizarrely know a lot about diesel injection problems, the systems share quite a bit in common.

ahh ok so the one i linked is not the one linked to the turbo but could do with replacing?

Yeah you will have 3 converters on your car.

1 for EGR/VAC area
2 for the Turbo .

If the manifold is coming off then go ahead and replace the vac pipes with bradied ones, the OEM ones get perished and leak easily.

the car felt lethargic to drive, put your foot down the speed was slowy crawl up 30/40mph. bury your foot to floor and the speed would not increase or would take ages.

you go out to overtake, the car kickdowns but doesnt really go anywhere

all i could compare it to was it felt ike i was driving a 1.0 litre engine car and not a 3.0 litre lol

its been sorted today, the guy said it was a filter within the actuator that clogged it up so running back to normal

Sorry for dragging this up, but filter in actuator? .. how can that be diagnosed, actuators are sealed units?!?

Going by Moars thread below there is a filter attached to the pressure converter. I have not taken one off myself so cant really comment but not sure if you have read his thread

hey, i dont have any error codes (as always) and the car has yet another power loss in low rev range. i was doing visual actuator check and the rod pulled when car started, but when engine stopped, the rod of actuator didn't move the whole time i was looking at it, up to 3 minutes....i heard it's supposed to come back after 20 seconds.....what it could mean? the vacuum is not releasing or it isn't even building the vacuum?

I'm pretty sure you can buy them separately, when the turbos were replaced on my 335d it wasn't necessary. It was a fault with the actuators because once they were replaced the next day it was running fine again. The previous owner got shafted, glad it wasn't me that had to fork out for it. Got the receipt for over 4500 when all that needed doing was actuators lol.
