Anyone have the Cobb FMIC yet??
I know a few people have asked before but has no one really bought/installed the Cobb FMIC yet? Guess I might bite the bullet. I just want to know if the install is easy.

Install is not too bad at all, but I know we have quite a few them on the street, so maybe someone else will chime in. In the meantime, here's the install guide if you'd like to check it out:

Just had mine installed yesterday. it was a direct fit. No permanent modifications were needed at all. Mount points and all the plumbing connections matched up, and it fit perfectly in the available space. Looks like it's made very well and strong, good weld lines. COBB did a very good job with it. It's about twice the size and three times the weight of the stock intercooler.

I don't think your choice of words above is creditable. Poor is a little harsh. Ill bet it performs equal to the helix. By no means poor.

I was going to say you can pick one up for 10% off on first thursday then I noticed you are in NY and there is no COBB shops around.
I heard it's a great intercooler. We also know that COBB has too big of a name to mess around and their history with BMW has proven that, unlike others... I might pick up one for my car soon. On my previous N54, I had an ETS 7" which I found great! it does require cutting but it's priced fairly and works great (no IAT rise throughout a 3rd gear pull)

removing the front bumper makes it a ton easier although not necessary.

COBB makes a great stepped-core intercooler, and is probably one of the best for the N54. With boost being maxed, I see flat IAT's that hardly ever go over 100F, throughout multiple gear pulls in South Florida. I have the Helix, but the IAT suppression characteristics are the same with COBB's FMIC.
Regarding the Helix comments, Helix has the same stepped core with a better end tank design (slightly less pressure drop), and also has aerodynamic "bars" in between the charge air rows to better direct air into the core. This probably doesn't make a huge difference on stock turbos, but lower pressure drop is always wanted. Last edited by E90Company; 05-14-2013 at 11:20 AM.. |
