It isn't politics so much as need: most of the US isn't cold enough to require higher cetane to help while starting. And after the engine is started, cetane appears to have little or no effect on mileage or power.

Which would explain why most of the "premium diesel" is located in the northern tier states. But it does not explain why the party line for BMW is to run 51 cetane or higher.

http://www.nesteoil.com/default.asp?...3-410A163D51DD I my self have notised this in dyno: exactly same conditions (temperature +1 c, raining, same time of year, one year apart) with same engine map Pro Diesel gave 11hp and 5Nm more power than regular Neste Oil diesel. One might say itīs only coincidence and never the conditions are exactly the same but for me anyway itīs a difference.

All this talk about fuel led me to some research in my neck of the woods, and I was pleasantly surprised that some of our fuel stations actually provide online technical information.
http://southlandco-op.ca/index.php?id=33 I would love to see Fuel information presented like this for all the suppliers.
