Battery Install
I've been posting to the wrong forum so I'll try here. I have installed a new OEM battery in my 2006 325i. I have everything hooked up except there is a connector that isn't connected to anything. The car won't start so I am guessing that it has something to do with this connector. Here are some pix.

I saw your post on the other forum. I really think the connector you are looking at is the shipping connector that is used to run the trunk release and various memories in the car while it is in transit from the factory. The BMW procedure for replacing the battery is very specific, and you can easily damage the IBS (negative cable) if you are not careful. Why not try and disconnect the battery, wait a few minutes and then reconnect everything.

Yeah I think your right about that connector. I ended up putting the old battery back in the car and it fired right up. I drove it to my mechanic to let him deal with it. He said my new battery needed a charge. It was reading 12.1v. It appears that these cars are quite finicky. My plan was to install a new battery and take it to the mechanic to have it "registered". Thanks BMW. This is the first time I've had to take a car in to change out a battery- ridiculous!

Thanks for the update. Wouldn't have thought that the battery you just bought was not fully charged. Now I am wondering what the heck is that wire on my car?!

If no codes are being thrown use Chevron Techron fuel injector cleaner (concentrate). It solves rpm fluctuating upon cold start-up. Also, for most BMW problems start off by scanning your car with the Peake Research Tool. It contains the actual BMW codes. If you want to register a newly installed battery for free (just buy a $10 cable) and google/download BMWLogger

wow what a pain. Since you and I have the same car, I'm guessing my battery will also go out soon. Can I ask you how much you paid for the battery and where did you buy it? Is this something you can trust a non-dealer BMW shop or should I just take it to the dealer for replacement?
thanks! |

There is a European Auto Parts Retailer near by me (BMA Auto Parts). I paid $194 including tax for an OEM BMW battery. It was about $100 bucks cheaper than buying from the dealer. The aftermarket ones I am told are better batteries but they are too small or too big. They just don't fit right. Thats why I went with the oem.

Back in the day when batteries were not sealed, they'd ship them "dry" and the parts store would fill up the battery with electrolite and the battery had enough charge built up to get the car started, or the parts store would fast charge it for a few mintues before that handed it over to you. Being that we're talking a BMW E90, it not suprising a battery with 12V on it wouldn't start a 12V car...
