Please help me find half shafts!!!
I was out on the track monday and broke another half shaft. Second in a month. They cant handle a 6sp manual launch. It's the weakest link on the drivetrain after the stock clutch.
Is there any upgraded ones out there??? |

I'm gonna bet you're launching at way too of an RPM seeing as how you're the only one whos had this problem. That being said, I wish you the best of luck and hopefully we can get some sponsors to alleviate this problem

I feel your pain. I broke 3 axles and just gave up using hoosier slicks. I no longer drag race the car unless its on street tires... and its no fun racing on street tire...

Yeah I was told aftermarket axles would be roughly over $1k... pretty crazy. I really think if I had an LSD it wouldnt have broken the axles... Im sure any one who brakes them doesnt have LSD because all power goes to the driver side wheel and it breaks every time you hook.

Im not drag racing until i get upgraded shafts. I went down the track with my INVO's and spun all the way through to 3rd. Still did a 13.6 at 112. Lucky winters coming so i have a chance to source some.

I don't think many cars are built with the expectation that they'll withstand a hard launch on drag radials with the car putting out almost 150% of the stock torque amount.

M3 was my first idea, but like mentioned above dunno if they are stronger or will fit. Even if they are stronger by how much? That car comes with less torque than ours so I wouldn't expect it to really be any stronger. Maybe lighter...

Our shafts are hollow and have a groove that is purposely weak, so it snaps there. I wonder if a lowered cars angle from diff to wheel has a role in extra stress on the shaft.

the angle of lowering defintely puts stress on the actual joint, i dont think it puts stress on the shaft itself unless it jumps from the torque, where are your breaks occuring?

if you have an old shaft, you should take it to a machine shop and see if they can make you one out of thick wall dom tubing, or solid, but i think solid would add way too much weight. i know machine shops can make axles for regular axles even cut splines if they had to, but the bmw ones have the bolted flange so its even easier

Do a google search for "carbon fiber driveshafts" there is a company that does shafts for mustangs and other cars. I'm sure they could provide a solution. I'd do the search for you but I'm on my phone.

what is the best way to go?
forged: steel? aluminum? carbon fiber, reinforced? Like mentioned before I guess you would want an upgraded clutch too and probably before (or same time) upgrading the 1/2 axles. Then, of course, what is next |
