BMW E91 crazy EPS (help)
Hello,
I've seen that there is similar topics, but none of them helped me Currently I have an issue with Electric power steering, it disappears time to time... Sometimes when I start my car, after few seconds I see on the dash warning light and bam, no power steering. Sometimes it happens while I'm driving (that happened only few times) I've tried to re-connect cables on EPS, but after few days that appeared again. Sometimes I can drive for a week, and nothing happens, sometimes it happens few times a day, or that warning never disappears... After scanning my car I get these faults: 004B2D - Message(OPERATION MSA, 0x195) 00C90B - PT-CAN communication error I'm starting to loose my nerves on that... What could be wrong??? The warning light looks: yellow steering wheel with exclamation mark. No other warning lights. |

Hi,
Tried almost everything, changed whole steering rack, repaired ground cable, checked wiring from rack to jbe. Everything is as it should be... Now sometimes it appears, sometimes not. No one can find what's happening... |

Are you able to start the car with the A114 code? You're getting multiple codes for steering lock as well as steering angle sensor.

To calibrate the steering angle sensor, start the car but leave it in park. Turn the steering wheel all the way to the left and hold it for a few seconds, then do the same for the right and hold for a few seconds, then turn it all the way left and all the way right, and bring it to the middle. That resets the steering angle sensor. If that doesn't fix it then you will need to code the sensor with a BMW diagnostic scanner. The sensor itself is inside the steering wheel and would need to be disassembled to access.

Unfortunately I tried everything that you mentioned. Calibrated position sensor with ista-d, changed car battery.
No issues with vehicle start-up, also changed ground cable to engine. Steering lock works as it should be. This sometimes happens when when I'm driving or when I start my car, mostly in the morning. The only thing that happens is heavier steering wheel, no steering assist and popping error every 10 ish seconds. Then I turn off my car, hold it for few seconds and error disappears, sometimes for weeks, sometimes for days. This started to happen after a long trip and after 8 days parking in quite steep hill with wheels turned to one side (almost fully). |

and EPS Module (A60233) is connected to PT-CAN bus, as shown in attached ISTA wiring diagrams. For some reason, the PT-CAN bus diagram does NOT show the EPS Module, or its PT-CAN wiring, but there IS a connector next to the Refrigerant Pressure Sensor. I would investigate for issue with PT-CAN connections at X60233/2, Red wire, & X60233/5, Blue/Red wire. Also, if you can identify X10557 & X10558 near the Refrigerant Pressure Sensor (B8), as shown in attached diagrams, I would inspect those. Please let us know what you find, George |

Thank you for your answer, to be more specific when there is warning EPS stops working correctly, steering wheel gets heavy and loose on higher speeds. In control tree it is viable at all times.
I have already checked wires from EPS to the end of engine bay. Also replaced EPS ground cable clamp to chassis. There was no mechanical damage, no cracks or oxidation signs. If there is an issue it is deeper. Would be great to connect oscilloscope, but while this issue is so inconsistent it would be hard to find the issue. As I wrote before if it appears error pops every 10 ish seconds, but it can get silent 5 mins later, but the warning icon remains until I turn off my car. It looks really strange, why this issue is so inconsistent, that's the hardest part of finding what could be wrong |

I manage to find beautiful cable next to battery 😅
After replacing it, next day I had the same issue, could it be, because I haven't cleared faulty codes? Also, at the end I've started to get codes like: No communication with EPS No communication with electric fuel pump controller I hope all these codes will disappear... But still, that's quite strange, why I have received the same issue with EPS, could bad cable damaged EPS? |
