320d Tune ?

Hey everyone,

I'm looking at getting a stage 1 tune on my 320d, there seems to be a few options out there ranging from tuning boxes that trick the ecu to dump more fuel and out of the box tunes. My car is a 2009 LCI model so i know for a fact the ecu cant be tuned through the obd2 port (bummer i know), unless they have cracked the encryption by now. I would like to get a proper tune done, I've have been looking at HPF, they advertise pretty respectable gains.

BMW 320d 2008 (Oct) – 2010 – E90/E91/E92/E93 130Kw 350Nm 165Kw 440Nm $ 1,195.00

Reason why I've been looking at HPF is they state that the tune will be specific to my car, and not a generic tune. I will probably be upgrading my intercooler before a tune so I would probably see a bit more power gains, (anyone know how much ?)

Anyone had any experience with them, or know a good tuning place?

Horsepower factory? Yeah I've looked into that too, custom tune their offering, the general flashes give you similar results and range from like 600-800 bucks. Personally I'd go with like chipexpress, I think max was like 176 you could get, 800 bucks for the unit. I'd only really considers custom tune if I had other mods like dpf delete or bigger turbo. Extensive mods are expensive and you don't get too much out of it, except for more boost. Right not in just saving money for something better, and when ever I he cashed up I'll just go ham with the modding a 320d haha :P

Chip express is plug and play box yeah ? You just plug it in the fuel rail?. I had something similar called a race chip it worked but if you increased the setting on it you start going into limb mode etc. plus I didn't like how it was a closed loop system, if something went wrong Ecu will think everything is fine, since all it does is trick the ecu into thinking fuel pressure is low so it compensates by increases fuel pressure thus more power. Since my car can't be flashed through the obd2 the ecu needs to come out so all those 800 tunes would cost me double. Which is why the custom tune is appealing to me.

Garage List
2011 BMW 320d  [10.00]
JBD is a tuning box as well..similar to DTUK, racechip and the like. Reckon they are rubbish!

I remember there is a member here installed a OEM BMW Performance ECU together with an upgraded intercooler on his 320d and received positive feedback.

Also worthwhile to check Evolve Technik, they offer custom ECU tune on most BMWs even the newer ones.

Wooshi my man, how did the Asian project go?
What the one hand guy got was a bluefin tune, I had that for a week, wasn't that impressive (why I refunded lol) I was at 8.5 sec 0-100, and 8.2 sec with the tune. Rough timings. Never heard of JBD, the other chap who got the PPK was Trev, guys the most you'll get out of a tune is max 170kw, maybe. After that you need more air, and then it gets capped at about 180kw because the injectors aren't that injecty. After that, ~500 bucks each injector for a highflow, they'll open em up as much as you want. And then all that pretty much matters is boost.

Didn't the PPK cost an arm and a leg ?

Yeah I know I'm actually considering the JBD, decent price I was reading about it at max setting it adds about 50kw at the wheels (but not recommend). But default they run at 60% which adds around 30kw so brings power up to 160-165kw

Its the same unit for 4 cylinder or 6 cylinder BMW engines. I have mine set to about 75% and it works great on the X5 3.0d as it did on our 320d. It makes a significant difference from stock.
