Honestly, if you are not thinking of getting rid of RFT's, lowering with springs is just committing suicide.. Especially in the roads like in nyc

i know this is an old thread but i had a question, if the eibach is designed for the I and not the XI, why do people still use them on their XI and whats the bad part of having this on the XI? And why choose Eibach over H&R?

the op doesnt come on here much anymore, i can't answer why he preferred the eibach, i know they provide less of a drop, and i believe a stiffer ride, but i did hear from him a few months ago and his shocks were beginning to show signs of blowing, not sure of his milage or anything, but it can be due to the springs

Actually it seems like H&Rs are stiffer than Eibachs. Probably why OP chose to go with Eibachs too

So if you buy Eibach, you'll need to buy struts, and if you buy H&R then you can use the stock struts?

Usually the opposite actually because H&Rs are stiffer than Eibachs. The reason stock shocks blow is because of the stiffer spring rates (and H&Rs have stiffer spring rates than Eibachs)

Basically, it's better to get shocks for both springs but with Eibachs, you most likely can manage without aftermarket shocks. All up to your budget. Keep in mind if you decide to get shocks later on, that's double the labor cost.

very informative thread!

my question is what effect does lowering your "xi" car on "i" springs have on the actual X drive system???

The rake is totally changed!! To my knowledge messing with the rake so far from OEM specs has an effect on the X drive system, as well as how tires wear.

ANY THOUGHTS ON THIS??? im wanting to order these springs cause the drop looks so damn perfect

thank you!

As far as I understand the lack of rake on an XI doesn't effect the X drive system. The purpose of the rake is to help the car travel through the snow during the winter. I'd be curious to see where this information came from since that's the first I've heard of it. Do you by chance have a link?

As for tire wear, as long as you perform an alignment after the new suspension has settled you shouldn't see any abnormal tire wear.

Untrue. We sell these with no problems to any with AWD systems.

Hi Henry,

I don't think changing the springs has any negative effect on whatever shocks are installed.

It's not going up and down more often. It's not putting anymore stress on the shock. If anything, it's reducing the frantic up and down of a stock spring.

I think this idea of stock shocks going bad soon after installing springs started when someone put springs on with already or close to bad or worn out shocks.

With that said, I was going to install Bilstein's before springs. But since the install process is the same, I'll install Eibach springs at the same time. I had this setup on my E30 and they were great.

I drove that E30 300,000 miles all around BC when I lived in Vancouver, BC from 82-99. Born in Kelowna.

I think that the shock 'blow out' with lowered stiffer springs has to do with the 'speed' at which the shock moves. 1" shock movement with stiffer springs will be faster than stock springs and the internal valving can't keep up with the increased speed, and 'blow out'. The sport shocks can handle the faster shock travel speed.

Whats up Kev? yeah I'm hardly ever on here anymore.. busy with work and other BS.
I chose the eibachs because they offered a softer ride (rode around in a xi with the H&R's and it just felt like shit, and they changed the rake of the car vs the 4x4 extra high front (BMW says it's for driving in harsh snow conditions, so it doesn't act as a snow plow.

So far I have put close to 60k miles on the car with the springs (got 72k now) shocks are beginning to blow. Just ordered the set of bilsteins and will be putting those on in the next few weeks. I will keep you posted.

Bringing this from the dead, unread every page and now I am torn between kwv1 and or doing just the eibach springs... Are the coils a better ride?? How about the rest of the guys that lowered on springs, what is your experience now after a few years.

Coilovers for sure. Spring + Stock shock will result in a really really harsh ride and the car will bounce up and down constantly which will annoy you to no end (personal experience. eibach pro-kit + xi stock shocks). You will fly when you hit dips . It also handles very bad and will show excessive amount of body roll.

If you're thinking about getting Eibachs + aftermarket shocks such as Koni Yellow, might as well spend the minimal extra amount of money and get the KW V1's.

Do KW V1 come with an xi specific option?

How hard are V1s to adjust so you get even loweing height all around? I'd imagine they would need to be corner balanced.

V1's are not adjustable in height, rebound or compression. Its settings are set in stone by KW, which chose what they believe is the optimal between performance and looks. And no, you would never a corner balance unless you track your car a lot or if your car sits very differently at each corner. Plus, the change after a corner balance is barely noticeable unless you really know your car well through tracking, etc.

You would definitely need an alignment after installing V1's, though.

I guess I meant to say that corner weight (which can be affected by height) cannot be adjusted by V1's. I was referring to the post above mine that talked about corner balancing.
I hope you mean V1's cannot adjust corner weight itself unless you change the height or something? Because any car with any coilover can be corner weighted/balanced.

The key and only features of each KW coilovers are:

KW v1 = Height adjustable; Not stainless steel in rear but stainless in front
KW v2 = Height, Rebound adjustable; Stainless steel both front and rear
KW v3 = Height, Rebound, Compression adjustable; Stainless steel both front and rear

All three coilovers can be corner balanced.

Just don't want to confuse other members..
