I spent $3400 on a 200,000 km , no time limit warranty for piece of mind for years of ownership to come. I can't sleep with one eye open, wondering if something might break today and having to come up with a couple of Gs on the spot.

Agreed. People freak out about the thought of a $2000 repair but have no problem buying a $3000 warranty that they may never use. Everyone in my family drives a BMW and NO ONE has ever had a repair that was over $1000.

Don't have a proper one besides a (effectively) useless 3rd party warranty provided by the dealer I bought the car from (not a BMW dealer).

Money spent so far (besides oil/filter changes):

1) Transmission leak fix
2) Brake rotors + pads all round
3) Spark plugs

Only the 1st one would have being fixed for free if it had BMW warranty, so not doing too pad I guess...

I can see some attraction of a warranty backed by the manufacturer, but I have friends with 3rd party plans find out the company went bankrupt once they tried to make a claim.

I recommend due diligence when you buy the car, records and PPI, then put a little away for repairs.

I guess you can still get BMW extended warranty.
Do not go for after market warranty.
If you are really paranoid, keep some money on the side every month for the repairs.
Find a good local shop.
For regular maintenance work like oil change, brake work, BMW dealership is the cheapest. You need to have a good relation with your SA, you can even get discounts on some repairs.

My CPO warranty expires in January. I've had the car since 32k, it now has 72k. In those 40,000 miles CPO has paid for the following:

-Water Pump
-6 injectors
-3 ignition coils
-Walnut blast of intake valves

- 2x HPFP - but these would have been covered under the part specific warranty without CPO

I don't know exactly how much I paid for CPO since it was lumped in with the car, but I'd say these repairs could have cost $3 - 4k at a dealership. I'm planning on having an Indy inspect before warranty expires to see if she needs anything else done. I'm not too concerned about being out of warranty since the main weak points have already been repaired or replaced (some twice).

Hopefully my experience helps. Warranties are like putting money on red or black. There's no way to know if it will pay or not. I bought a 3rd party warranty for my wife's car, a Nissan Murano, for $2k and it has already paid close to $5k with 3 years 30k miles to go. It could have just as easily gone the other way, but I wanted the piece of mind.

The main thing is to take care of the car if you're out of warranty. Follow Mike Miller's maintenance schedule and pray you don't have a lemon.

Bought car at 100k after CPO expired for the previous owner. Im a experienced mechanic and take care of my cars myself. However if I were in your situation I would add up the cost of typical repairs for these cars over the warranty period. Then compare that to the cost of the warranty. Also weigh in the cost of random large repairs. The engine probably isn't going to die but something like a convertible top could be a large repair. Keep in mind that these companies are out to make money through these warranties and they profit off the fear of expensive repairs and piece of mind. So chances are the repairs you'll encounter will be less than the cost of the warranty, otherwise the warranty company wouldn't be in business anymore. A transferable warranty can improve the resale value of a car if you plan to sell it off later.

This is my second 335 with no warranty. First one I bought was an 07 with 40k and I lost it at 80k miles. Never had any problems so never would have used a warranty even if I had one. My new to me 335 is an 09 with 25k. I am not worried.

I also only drive my car 10k miles a year and baby it so i dont think the warranty would pay for itself in my case, at least im hoping this to be true.

Have had the car for about 6 months and just spark plugs changed so far. 150 bucks

Wouldnt the injectors have been covered out of warranty also?

I've own my car with high mileage (2006 330xi bought with 118k) and it has yet to need anything outside of regular maintenance. I do everything myself on the car anyway. Though I do "treat" it to some dealer service if my local dealership is having a deal on any service. A warranty wasn't even gonna be an option for me. lol

Thankfully I got most of the common issues done under warranty. Now I'm driving it until the car dies lol.

I don't have a warranty. I do my own preventative maintenance very regularly and I don't abuse my car (I drive it hard, but only when properly warmed up and not for long periods of time). The only corrective maintenance I've needed to do was a LP fuel sensor, which I bought online for around 60 dollars and installed myself in a couple of hours.

I don't believe there is a need for a warranty if you ensure preventative maintenance is done properly and on time and that you don't 'ask too much' of your vehicle in extreme conditions.
