Help - Cars making a weird noise?

Was at the lights today and noticed a diesel engine kinda noise.. thought it was the car next to me.

Next time i was stopped i could still hear the sound.. Its like a shuddering/vibrating sound similar to a diesel.. It only happens on idle, and kinda fades in and out.. sometimes its really loud..

As soon as i apply the gas the noise goes away completely and the engine sound normal.

Got it booked in for tuesday.. anyone know what it could be? Its a petrol e92

sounds like the piezo injectors - dealer will probably report 'no fault found' - my 325i vert used to do it.

They are supposed to make that noise apparantly!

I took it in and they told me it needed a software update (shock) which is pretty much their answer to everything.

The service advisor told me that they were going to raise the idle RPM to stop the noise from returning. I then said to her that raising the idle is just covering up the problem (because the noise stops when a tiny bit of gas is applied).

She then went on about how they do this to a lot of cars with the same problem, blah blah, and if it recurrs bring the car back again, so I just told her to do what she thinks is best.

I get the car back, and she says the noise has stopped etc. I notice that they havent raised the idle RPM, the needle sitting in the exact same position as before.

Two days later I hear the noise again. Now to take it back. And on top of that for some reason all my shortcut number keys for nav/radio/etc have been wiped off, and i cannot reprogram them for some reason.

The idle will be the same because it is not possible to adjust it. The noise is also a characteristic of direct injection petrol engines due to the high pressure of injection directly onto the piston crown.

My dads new petrol merc sounds crap at idle too

Like Johnny said must just be the new high pressure fuel rail/pump combos they are using these days for fine tolerances.

The noise you describe is akin to my thoughts when hearing my dads car. I was going to tell him to ring them up about it but then i thought it must be the fuel tolerances and set up.

I had all new injectors in my 320i at one stage.
Drove it home it I thought 'great, drives good!', until I sat idling on the drive....
"WTF is that noise!!" says I, even getting out to listen to it.
Direct injection petrol engines can sound, errr, "crap" at idle.

I know what you guys mean, on idle it doesnt sound great, but after 2 years theres this new noise - like something is loose and rattling in the engine and it makes thuds as it rattles (but its not particularly loud)

what dealer did u take it too? prehaps try another, i agree if a car has been fine for 2yrs then suddenly you start hearing strange noises, then it needs to be rectified. if all the same models are sounding that way from factory, than fine, but looks like this is not the case here. you never know may be an indicator of bigger problems to come??

This is exactly my train of thought.. Warranty is expiring this coming September aswell.

I took it to Sytner Harold Wood in Essex, which, in my experience of three dealers are the best out of a pretty bad bunch.
