What is the widest tire you can put on a 18 X 8.5 oem wheel?

Was wanting to get the widest look I could get on a 18 x 8.5" oem wheel for the rear of a 2006 325xi wagon, without the tire spilling over the edges too much. I know that 255/35/18 will do fine and I know that tire rack says I can't go over that size... but has anyone else tried something different. And I guess I will have to do a tire that will give me a height that will be within 1% of the rear in the front (18 x 8")s wheel... staggered setup
Any good inexpensive all season tire recommendations?
Anyone have any experience with the new Yokahama ADVAN sport a/s? They are about a $100 a set less than the Hankook Ventus S1 Noble 2

A lot of people run 265/35 with no problem. In fact I have that size in my winter setup.

What would I need to run in the front to closely match the diameter of the rears? I have a X-drive wagon and I hear that is fairly important to be within 1% of each other...

235/40-18 in the front if you run 265/35 - 18 in the rear.
