Great minds think alike! I've done this on a few cars in the past (usually while waiting for air intakes to come out), and found it can help slightly. Why haven't you tried it yet?

I put in an ITG filter and I seem to get more noise now anyway. Plus I can hear the diverter valves and turbos A LOT louder too. I guess I just ended up thinking that if it was there for a reason and not removable from the start then Ill leave it. Its not like the older airboxes that had clipped in ports or baffles that you could remove in 5 mins and make it sound like V-Tec

Yeah it probably doesn't do a lot one way or the other, but on the plus side its free and I don't think it hurt anything. A friend had the idea to raise the entire air lid 1/4 - 1/2" with a spacer (until it hits the hood). I'm not sure how such a spacer would look, but its something to work on.

The only thing that made sense when I brought this up the first time was that the fins might act as load balancers for the top. Because the fins pretty much touch the filter, they might keep the top from compressing under force. Now with the fins removed, there might be more flex in the lid and actually create less volume of air available to pass through.

I would worry more about the filter sucking up than the lid sucking down, but there isn't enough vacuum in there to do either imo. I didn't notice any addl noise with mine, maybe when I add the K&N filter it will get louder.

The rest of the day was spent playing Command & Conquer 3.

Terry, I'm surprised how you have so much free time with a little baby. I can't even find a free minute to go wash my car, but then again... I have two little babies

Hehe he was being pretty good this weekend, mostly sleeping and trying to teach himself to crawl. Next weekends project is to baby-proof the house. I can't imagine two of them at the same time, I think he's going to be an only child.

I was looking at our whole intake setup last night. It seems like it wouldn't be to hard to remove the whole intake box and all and create a "Y" coming from each of the pipes feeding the turbos and add a large cone filter. Then I was planning on fabricating a box around it tying it into the factory snorkel.

I had noticed the same thing and considered doing it; but then decided against it as I do not have the time to dedicate to do it correctly.

Brilliant.

BMW paid some guy a lot of money to design that... but you totally made it better.

If only they had hired you instead.

Noted. I'll come back when I forget that there are complex fluid mechanics at work that have probably been calculated and optimized.

In defense, the original designers were also concerned with sound as well as performance with the prior possibly getting the most attention.

But in this case, I doubt the fins provided any real sound suppression.

The bar is to help hold down the filter, and I think the fins are there to help draw air across filter more evenly for longer filter life (at the expense of peak flow).

Yeah I used to do that. On this car the filter is under the hood so it won't work.
