Damn scratch on brand new car!
Well, I finally got my wonderful E90 in Jet Black.
When I got it home and was really looking closely at the paint on the car, I discovered a pretty deep scratch under the door handle of the drivers side door. I can't really gauge how "deep" it really is, and it is definitely out of view unless you look for it. It just bothers me thats all. Can I ask the dealer to try and buff it out? Its going to be tough becuase of the location. I tried using some off the shelf scratch remover to no avail. |

I know how u feel (that it bothers)...
If the dealer does it for free, then y not fix it. It will take an hr atmost. Also, my dealer asked me to take a scratch-dent-insurance(upon my baby's delivery) thats worth around $450 for 3yrs. Ask your dealer. |

being that you just got the car, i understand your pain. If it is really a deep scratch on black, no buffing is gonna help. I say just leave it alone and start enjoying your new ride. You can think of the scratch as a birth mark or a beauty mark (that might help you get over it soon). Congrat and enjoy.

If your fingernail catches it, you're either stuck with it or gonna need to remove a LOT of clear. Paint is very very very thin, despite how deep it may look to our naked eye.
If its not noticeable, drop it. Telling the dealer to fix it may result in much much worse scenerio. I.E. Halograms, Swirls, Bufferburn, ect. |

Problem is, its in such a tight location that no buffer will fit in there. |

If its not noticeable and is in a small area, try fixing it yourself. Try grabbing some ScratchX from your local Auto Store. Its a mildly light hand polish that may take several attemps, but will smooth out the edges of the scratch to make them less noticeable. Do NOT use anytype of rubbing compound, as I fear your level of experience isnt enough.Just use some of that Meguairs ScratchX and like I said, smooth out the edges. Its a polish, so in order for it to work you have to rub it into the finish. Doing so will NOT ruin your finish, and will take many many many attemps using a lot of pressure to even think about causing any damage. Give it a try and feel good after that you did it yourself. |

If you're going to ask the dealer to fix it, do it immediately before they can argue that it wasn't like that. At least tell them about it and still have a choice.
If it's inside the handle area it was probably some jerk with a huge ring on that did it.

I didnt have them wash it because I was in a time crunch and would bring it back for them to wash. When I get home underneath the built up pollen, I found the scratch. |

Take it back to the dealer and just see what they say. Usually they will try to do something for you... from my experience, most of them won't just turn you away.. they will try to offer you a solution. And if one dealer doesn't help, take it to another one... just claim you heard that their service dept is top notch (pad their ego) and ask if there's anything they could do to help.
Congrats on the car, and good luck with your scratch! |

Take it back, but I would not recommend having them fix it. Ask for a credit toward merchandise or something. The jet black paint is very thin and it almost impossible to work with. I made the dealer take back a jet black x5 that was delivered with scratches. They could never make them completely dissapear. Once they start buffing it will leave scratches in the clear coat that will show everytime the way wears off.

I agree. The dealer could just make it worse. What can the dealer really do that you can't do yourself.
Anyways, since this thread has gotten this much attention don't you think we deserve some pics already. |

i know how u feel ,even the lightest scratch causes me irritation. must warn u that the culprits may be your neighbours. in singapore, neighbours have been caught by car CCTV vandalising cars.
when i was in darlington UK, i had a deep scratch on my e36 325i car when i was out only for 1 hour. the culprit prob saw me leaving the hospital hostel premises for a town visit with my friends from london with my baby pram and struck my car. unfortunately, car envy is an international disease. |
