The same reason why a buddy of mine was able to pick up a brand new Porsche Boxter for 40k all in (this was in early '09) and the dealership was 'clearing' out all '08 models. Being 'recession savvy', I opted for the 335i at the time for a few k's less and am loving it to this day.

Moving back to Canada, EVERYTHING seems to be more expensive though including cell phone plans.
