Question To keep or not to keep

2008 CPO 328xi coupe 46,000 miles still has about 14-15 months of CPO and maintenance. Bunch of issues under my 17 months of ownership;

Per request... I owe nothing on the car i have the title. The KBB is like $24,900 i can get more if Pvt sale since CPO and maintenance for a while left. Not many black/black nav awd coupes by me, i think only 7 and only 1 with cpo still.

The A4's i was looking at are 2009 $23k -$25k with about 37,000-45,000 miles CPO

issues include:
-All taillights replaced 2 weeks after i got the car
- Grill had to be replaced (dealer put wrong one so had 2 dif ones)
- 2 slow leaks in the RFT's (not getting reg and doing the kit...car should have a donut not dead space in the trunk)
-DRL out
main issues*

- 2 cylinder heads and something else replaced due to engine ticking

- Passenger headlight assembly replaced

- now the issue with the rear differential ( see thread http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=701520)

Is it worth keeping and if so how long? Or am i better off selling over the summer while still under CPO use that as a sales pitch to sell pvt/trade in to get most $$.

Was looking at an 09 CPO a4... i know its Audi but i had one for 3 years and no issues plus it has more features than mine (auto dimming mirrors, bluetooth, and ipod direct instead of Aux, no nav but still has screen as its standard and i dont care for it anymore the few times i need nav i have an iphone and can get a tom tom for $250 that updates maps and traffic yearly for free)

let me know what you guys think, try not to be too bmw biased.

Thanks...ps this forum is 50x better than the audi one, way more bmw enthusiasts.

You don't say how much it is worth vs market value, how much you owe. Essential data to make a judgment call.

I was asked >3000$ for a differential issue as well. There is a very subtle whistle but I wouldn't act on this alone. It has 70Kmiles and oil level is ok.

I just don't see the A4 to be a car as much fun as my E90. So far, it is fairly reliable at high mileage. My E9X is is like to be more memorable than all the Audi I owned before so it is a keeper. I just love it.

Dont get an Audi. While yes I loved mine, the love only lasted 3 months. I had to replace (on a 4cyl):
-9 coils total over 2 years
-water pump
-air regulator
-radiator
-both front bushings TWICE
-engine mounts
-both headlight units

Car was '09 and had it from 2010 - 4 months ago. 40k miles(bought) - 68k miles (sold)

can u explain how i would lose money on the taxes? Not sure i'm understanding that.

Yea i paid tax on it when i got it and then if i sell it pvt and then buy another car i will be paying tax again but how is there any way to avoid the taxes besides keep the car?

it just worries me that as soon as warranty runs out i will need a $4k repair and that alone would make it worth getting into a newer car now with a warranty that extends further in the future.

update* dealer still has the car, there were no notes on it except parts ordered. I was told that the car needs a new wheel bearing on the passenger side rear wheel. (probably explains the sound) Also more importantly they found a bunch of oil leaks... not sure on details as SA didnt have much but i would definitely notice if it was leaking out under my car since i park in the same spot for work daily.

- she mentioned one part they ordered just hte part alone would have cost me $2,555 and thats just one of the few parts and that doesnt even include labor. Dealer or indy that would be a hell of a lot of money.

Once you reach the point where you think more about what may be next to be repaired or what that sound was than your next mod or where you're going to drive next it's over. Time to sell the car. If AWD is a necessity (and in MD it probably is) I don't blame you for looking at an Audi but you may just be trading one high maintenance vehicle for another.

G37 AWD or IS350 AWD may be more reliable alternatives.

Have you looked at reliability / repair history for the A4 and its competitors yet?

When u trade-in, u don't pay taxes. Actually u only pay taxes on a price difference vs full amount. That's about $1500. So if you can trade your car in for around $21k, I would gladly take it

If i got a non german car i would regret it within a few months because the build and ride is far superior than the japanese cars.

As far as the audi, i had an 07 a4 leased and didnt have any problems with the car and i beat the hell out of it, always parked outside, used in the worse weather (09 blizzard). My friend has a 2010 a4 no problems besides having to add oil once in a while which if thats my only problem and i would sign up for that and the dealer knows about that and just tops it off whenever you need for free.

I looked at the IS250 awd, it looks great from outside but inside looks realyl dated compared to the 09 a4. Family member has an RX330 and its still expensive every time it goes in. So if thats the case i rather just get the a4.

I had a mustang, a4, g37 coupe, 3 series and the only cars i didnt have any problems with were the mustang and A4...the only two that were new when i got them.

Understood, so i would only pay taxes on say $3,000 if i got 21k and bought the other car for 24k.

However i think i'm going to try to sell online first because i can get higher than 21 online do to the lack of supply by me. Within 100 miles of my home (NJ..moving back from md next week) there is only 7 328xi coupes w/ Nav and only 1 black one and none has both warranty and maintenance left.

therefore i think i have the upperhand on selling online since someone will see the warranty and maintenance and justify my higher price as well as the tints, OEM alarm i added, all weather floor mats, and everything else that came with the car along with the clean car fax.

My plan is to sell online for hopefully 24k kind of high but according to kbb its not that high and kbb doesnt take the warranty and maintenace into account. Then go to the other dealer bargin them down to 23k...pay the 7% tax on the 23k which is $1610 and that would bring me upto $24,610 and hardly anything out of pocket. Not looking to pay more than $1800 out of pocket.

* another note my insurance with an A4 would drop $210 a year plus better MPG and a longer warranty life = knocking down the actual cost over time.

i think that all makes sense

dont know about B8 reliability, but loaded they are nice cars. B7s were just as reliable as 3-series, minus oil burning 6-speed, premium, sport, and possibly s-line pkgs are a must on A4s. tune that with APR or GIAC and you got yourself a pretty fast AWD car.

Just a bit of personal experience:

I recently just bought a 2009 328xi coupe sounds a bit like yours with sport, premium, nav, comfort and all that good stuff along with a few exterior mods. I absolutely love the car and plan to keep it for a while. Go back to a few months ago and I had basically the same car but a 2006 330i, the only reason I got rid of that was because the miles were creeping up, around 75k, and I didn't want to keep it and run into potential issues down the road. When I sold that I went and looked around at other brands simply because it would have been my 4th bmw in a row if I had bough another one. After searching and looking at all different brands and models I decided to buy a 2008 Audi A4 S-line with titanium package. I had the car immediately APR tuned and a few other mods because it was god awful slow stock (6 Speed). Although the car was spirited after that it still wasn't a BMW. I sold it 3 weeks later and bought the 2009 E92 that I now have and love.

thanks for the input. I looked at the curb weight and the bmw is like 1300 pounds heavier than the a4 and there is only about a 20-25hp difference. When i had my old 07 a4 it actually felt faster than the bmw, the sport mode was a lot more responsive than my 328xi DS mode. Plus i feel the quattro is better than xi thus allowing you to go faster around corners and in bad weather. Cant deny the bmw torque is a lot better but i wouldnt say that the 328xi is a lot faster than the a4.

Ok so throwing a little wrench into this....

the car has 46k miles and it is getting the transfer case replaced and a wheel bearing. Is that normal or odd or a red flag to sell it or what???? its at the dealer as we speak still.
