Odd.... think my car has re-set itself !!

Ok, so over the months I've seen my service mile (mls) indicator drop from 14,000 (when I bought it with 4800 on the clock) down to 8000 mls a few weeks ago.

Was out in the car a few times today and it definitely read 8000 mls more than onec on start-up....... until this evening that is.

I don't recall what it was when I set off about 7pm, but when I returned to the car around pm (after bike ride) and pressed the button it was reaing 14,000 mls.

So, I drove to the wee shop (Mrs wants chocolate) and again it was reading 14,000 mls [to service]. Did a a few on/off checks in the drive same thing.

Anyone else seen anything like this is the past? Is this a known issue? Think a trip to the dealers is in order.

OK, so I guess no-one has seen this before. Time to visit the dealers I guess.

I think it changes depending on how hard you drive the car. . . . but I don't think it changes that much.

Mine was down to 6,000 miles and I had many weeks of very short journeys - I've only done 3,000 miles in the last six months or so and one day I started it and it had gone back up to 12,000 miles!.

The dealer put the key through the reader but because the total mileage wasn't ridiculously high for a 320d it was decided there was no fault. It has now gone down to 9,000 miles but I've only done an actual 1,000 miles. (So currently meaning 23,000 miles in total for first service).

Have your key read for fault codes but I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I drive like a normal BMW driver I hope. Good, restrained but when conditions permit I enjoy the car. But what worries me is that 14,000 mls was what it was reading when I bought the car, so its steadily drops 1000 mls per month and then one evening hikes back up to 14,000 mls.

I want the car to be serviced at the right interval which is end Sept '09, so can't really on the trip telling me how many miles to go.

Think I'll watch it over the next few days.... shyould have a early finish next Friday (last day at the job) so opportunity to pop along to dealers with it.

Changing the oil more frequently than necessary never hurt a car yet but... BMW use Condition Based Servicing where the on board computer works out when servicing is required and it uses fancy algorithms (so they say) to work out when the car needs serviced. If you are driving the car "normally" (whatever that is) then the mileage to next service will reduce by 1,000 miles for every 1,000 extra miles travelled. If you are driving the car hard then the service interval will shorten - fairly obvious - but if you are driving the car easily then it stands to reason that the mileage to next service can go up.

On my first day with the car, it showed 19,000 miles to next service. I ran it in carefully and most days the car was doing a 60 mile round trip journey which didn't involve high speeds or high accelerations. The mileage to next service went up to 22,000 miles then 23,000 and, after a week of owning the car, went to 25,000 miles. Ever since, it had been going down at the rate of about 1,000 miles for every 900 miles actually driven.

Then I had a period where the car sat unused four days a week and the rest of the week was only light use. Then, about 3,000 miles ago it reduced further to about 5 or 6 miles per day with the occasional 12 mile journey. It was during this time that it jumped from 6,000 to 12,000 and the reason is because it extrapolates condition based upon current usage and this is the result of the way I'm using the car just now. In the last few weeks I've been using it more and it has gone from 12,000 to 9,000 miles although I have only done about 1,000 miles.

Sorry for the long winded approach but I hope it made some sense.

Mine has steadily gone gone 1000 mls on counter every 100 miles driven. Logically the service is due in 8000 mls or there abouts, not 14,000 from now.
