clutch under warranty?!?

I have a 2006 330i with 43,000 miles. The dealership today told me that my clutch had to be replaced and that it was not under warranty. My manual tranny on my Honda was replaced at 95,000 miles. It seems very early to get a manual tranny replaced, but I feel the gears slipping which I why I brought it in.

Is it really true the clutch is NOT under WARRANTY?!?!? This seems ridiculous.

I just got off the phone with BMWNA. They said the clutch is NOT covered under warranty. F---!

I've never had a clutch go out before 90,000 miles before. 43,500 is just not right. I'm pissed.

should be covered!

i asked my dealer about this a few weeks ago..

he said it is covered unless it is determined tht the clutch has been abused.

i asked him how they determine that and he said that they can tell by the way it is worn...whatever that means.

but if your dealership hasn't examined the clutch closely, then they are just giving some BS.

go to another dealership.

interesting point...a colleague of mine has a 5MT 05 honda crv with about 90.000 miles.
i let him drive my 6MT and they way he uses the clutch, shifting too early/often and riding it often, made me cringe.
i asked him about his clutch and he said that he never had to service or replace it.

hard to believe that our 6MT would need service at under 50k.

If you wear out your clutch, it makes sense that it's not under warranty. If your clutch fails due to a manufacturing defect, it makes sense that it's under warranty. It would be nice if BMW included the clutch as part of the free maintenance program (like the brakes), but it doesn't.

BTW, it doesn't sound like they need to replace your manual transmission, but just your clutch, right? Your first sentence quoted above confused me. If they're replacing the whole transmission, that sounds more like a potential mfgr defect and warranty work.

My dealer said the clutch for a standard manual is not covered under warranty. This doesn't mean there can't be circumstances where the dealer won't replace it for free. I had the dealer replace mine as part of the purchase negotiation.

Why does shifting too early wear the clutch faster than shifting later?

At lower RPMs (<1500rpm), you're essentially using alot of torque to get the car moving. Adds more stress on the clutch...

This is one of the reasons that the diesel e9x don't come in manual.

Looks like it is hit and miss depending on the dealer.

There is a difference between Transmission replacement and the clutch. They might choose not to replace it as part of the warranty if they feel it was abused. Try another dealer first.

okay, sometimes I'll be in 1st gear and gas to like 2k RPM, and then do a slow shift to 2nd gear

when I do that, there is ABSOLUTELY NO JERK AT ALL, i mean you can't feel a dam thing....

does that to unnecessary damage to the clutch? I ask cause if I shift slowly into 2nd gear, by the time I switch I'm at like 1.5K RPM, which is what the RPM should be if Im in 2nd gear going like 15 mph....

does that hurt the car? does anyone else do that from time to time?

It depends if you are in a hurry. When driving in traffic, what you do makes sense. There is a bit of wear on the clutch whenever you shift, but going by what you put down I would not worry about damage, damage being defined as an excessive wear. Just enjoy using your MT, and avoid situations where you can smell the clutch.

Ok, I admit it. There were times I totally abused by clutch. Lesson learned.

Take it to an independent shop for that...
My car is out of warranty now, and there's no way I'd take it to the dealership for anything service/repair related.

Only the 335d, and that only because BMW does not have a transmission in stock that works. There are a lot of manual transmission diesels in Europe, BMW and otherwise.

I have a e92 with 6mt and just got a new clutch under warranty last week. My old one was slipping at 22,000 miles and they replaced it with a RMFD Clutch. Unfortunatley, that clutch is slipping after four days of driving with it. Not sure how this is going to go over with them.

The clutch is a part that wears out just like a break pad. It will be covered under maintenance.
