Glow plug fault
I've had a rough idle at start-up issue for a while now, I've got the codes off the car, and it's showing:
4252 DDE: Glow plug, cylinder 5, activation - Open Circuit - Fault currently present - fault would......... (then it goes off the edge of the screen) Would one faulty glow plug cause such uneven idling? Also, I can't seem to access any of the three DDE Diesel Electronic modules listed in DIS to be able to interrogate the system further, any idea why this is? |

I'm interested to know if they only changed one glow plug or all of them?
I've only got the one at fault, but I've read this on the ECP website: While there is no scheduled replacement interval for glow plugs they do have a limited lifespan and are often forgotten about until they fail. The amount of heat which a glow plug produces diminishes over time and this causes the engine to become progressively harder to start in cold weather. For that reason it is advisable to replace the glow plugs every 40,000-60,000 miles. There's 20% off all parts currently so I can get 6 plugs delivered for £72, so I think I'm going to do all of them. |

How long does this rough idle last? Mine catches very quickly but is slightly rough for a few seconds at most.
If I leave ignition on for 5 seconds before starting it's fine. When it's warm there's no issue. |

I got 3 glow plugs down. Has to be around -5 before I get the cold start judder and even then it judders for about 10 secs
I bought a full set to replace but my indi said that if he swung on the bar any more he'd snap them off so for now just left them as is |

I always think its a good idea to replace them and grease them up while you still can. I had three down made no difference to running or starting. I just noticed the codes come up so I changed out all six.

I think they are powered when cold to produce a glow then powered down but normal running temperatures themselves cause the plugs to glow and therefore aid ignition |

Bit of a thread resurrection here, but thought it would be better than starting a new one.
I was checking fault codes on my E90 325D yesterday and amongst others, I noticed a fault with glow plug 5. Now I don't have any issues with cold starting, or rough idle, so I'm wandering what issues I can expect from this? The car is going into the garage for brakes and clunking noise next week, so if its a quick job, I might ask them to do this Ta |

With a six pot it will prob be 3 or more until you get a noticeable issue first thing will be a slight increase in fuel consumption as the cylinder with the glow plug out might not be clean burning as although it prob does have a glow the tip (business end of the plug) will be worn out. When I have my VW four pots it always was fine on 1 out but rough on two and dire on three. I always used to run Bosch plugs they were good on wear and were not bank breakingly expensive. It is advisable to replace all plugs at once so all cylinders are equal.
