Garrett Turbos?

Anyone heard of them?

Are they "big" players for the n54?

Garrett's are among the best turbos out there. This platform has used mostly precision turbos but I do believe vargas uses Garrett.

Garrett sells really good turbos, but you could get Forced Performance or Tial turbos that have better internals.

Not sure what your point is though?

For a second I thought you were kidding. Garrett is one of the biggest names in the turbo industry.

No!!!! ....I've been on here for a long time!!! and never heard of them!!!! .... I only hear about Cobb, JB4, Vishnu , meth etc....

I must be spending too much time in the UK section!

It's only when I saw someone post ( on the Audi TT owners group) that he had a 335i with Garrette turbos....that I started asking about Garrette.

In the 4 cyl world as far as street cars Garrett GT/GTX 3071 and 3076 are the most popular "big turbos" you will find. On bigger 6 cyl engines like the N54, Supra Turbo etc (cars that require bigger turbos) Precision Turbo seem to get the nod.

Like Mike from HP said, the Vargas Stage 3 will be using Garrett turbos. The "problem" with the N54, is that until now it would be pointless to put a quality Garrett turbo on the factory N54 turbo manifolds because they'd be a HUGE restriction.

The Precisions are another good turbo (probably best bang for buck) and you can option them out like the Garretts/Forced Performance/Tials/, etc with ball bearings, billet wheels, etc. The major difference is that Precisions are strictly oil cooled (easier to setup) AND they're cheaper. So you've got the Supra crowd using monster 72mm+ sized turbos, spraying lots of NOS to increase spool/power (kills the wheels over time), so after a while the turbo needs to be replaced... So not really any justification to buy a top of the line turbo (like a Garrett GTX or Borg Warner) when you can get an equal performing Precision for 1/2 the money.

Garrett turbos are really big in the Japanese car tuner scene. This is actually the first time I've heard of them for a BMW though.

Probably the most well known turbo in the world. Ever hear of a GT35 turbo? Sure you have.

Anyway, never heard of 'em myself.

Garrett (owned by Honeywell) is one of the best turbo manufacturers out there. Lots of off brands are just made in someone's back yard with a slew of parts/pieces, no real testing or development going on. I have fallen victim to this before on a different platform.

Precision is cheap and makes a lot of power. They are not in the same class as Garrett, nor should they be at 1/2 the cost. IMO for a daily driver that you want longevity, spool, reduced time-to-torque, and efficiency, it's going to be very very difficult to beat a Garrett turbo, but you'll pay for it.

So it goes, right?

Tial doesn't make turbochargers. There is a very big misconception that they do. They make housings, and use Garrett CHRA's in their housings and then call them the Tial X (insert name), so saying Tial turbos have better internals than Garrett isn't really accurate as Tial turbos are Garrett turbos.

Mitsubishi turbo's are actually pretty good but they way they had BMW design them for this particular platform was their pitfall, IMO. There is always something better but $$ is the name of the game.

How old are you lol? I ask because almost all oem sourced turbos thru the last several years have been sources from Borg Warner, Mitsubishi or IHI. Garrett turbochargers haven't been popular oem sourced since Mustang SVO/T-bird/Saab turbo days when they were AiResearch and not Honeywell.
Mitsubishi is a quite popular oem turbocharger supplier probably only second to BW and as an automaker they've had way too many oem turbo cars not to know what they are doing (starion, mirage turbo, eclipse turbo, Galant VR4, 3000GT turbo, Lancer/Evo). I had 1rst and 2nd gen DSMs and the turbochargers were the most reliable thing on the damn cars. Automotive industry is usually just a small part of turbocharger companies focus. Most make their bread and butter in heavy industries and large diesel engines (trucks, tractors, bulldozers ect)

I can't say I've seen anyone bolt up either a dual or single garrett turbo charger to the N54. Single would probably be the way to go because of the oem manifolds, no?
