325d Ecotune Report

Having purchased my 325d M Sport manual in May I have really come attached to how well she handles (I own an E30 M3), her looks, economy and overall all-round abilities.

As she had covered just under 100,000 miles I knew the DPF would not last for ever. I discovered the Ecotune packaged and after 2 telephone conversations with Stan I waited until I could afford the conversion.

Eventually the funds arrived from a job I did at the Festival of Speed and once payment was received the deal was completed.

The parts arrived and set about following the instructions. The next part is the only problem I came across during the whole process. I could not get the software to work. After 2 calls with Stan, my iflash had arrived with a map already on the unit. I received a replacement the next day and all worked as instructed.

The car was booked in for Friday, but this fell through, so rescheduled for Monday.

At 1.30pm the car was on the ramp and the replacement process started. Off with the underside and engine trim. Removal of the sensors, one at a time and transferred to the replacement pipe – this made it easier to remove the DPF too. Next the exhaust and turbo clamp. Once free at both ends and the fixing clamps removed the box was just too big to slide out. I had to remove the engine mount and after a lot of fiddling and 1.5 hours later( just trying to get the DPF out) the filter came out – this was the biggest pain.

Next the replacement pipe was offered up and after a little effort of lining up we attached the bracket bar on the pipe to the car to keep it in position.

The next pain was the clamp and this took a good 20 minutes to get on, due to the lack of space to get to it and to squeezing the link on, took 2 of us, but was done.

The rest was a breeze and the car was ready at 5.20

I loaded up the new maxi map and the car started first time. No error codes once loaded either!

First quick drive in the car park she felt more responsive on light throttle. Out on the road the performance was very noticeable. The engine revved to the red line without running out of puff at 4,500 rpm and pulls so much harder. There was a little smoke the first time on full throttle from low gears, but no smoke now.

In addition to the performance on cruise control on the motorway the mpg needle sits further to the left of the 50mpg mark.

I have seen a combined 750 miles from the range and miles travelled on a tank with the standard map, so believe 800+ is achievable as I don’t drive her hard for most of the time.

To sum up I have been extremely impressed with Stan and his service, the parts have been easy to understand and the pipe fitted perfectly. If this upgrade can add 5 mpg then after 100 tanks it will have paid for itself and saved me an expensive DPF replacement cost and increased the longevity of the turbo as it can now spin more freely.

I now get more power and more mpg!

I am now one happy customer.

My DPF was blocked as well on around 93000 miles. I managed to get it specialised cleaned and the performance of the car is much improved.

I wish I could remove it like you did but for me, this was not an option as the ECU is locked.

Nice writeup by the way. You got any pics?

My time was limited and knew it was going to be a pig to get the DPF out. I thought it would take me 3 hours, but was 4+ in the end.

It was pretty straight forward to be honest.

Drive update

Last night my brother-in-law was round and i had not really driven the car hard since the new map and pipe were on.

We jumped in and out onto the A1. All i can say is simply staggering........

It revs round to 5k with no issues at all in gears. I need to watch what i say, but we were both just amazed at how it performed. As you can see from my cars that i own, i have driven quick cars and this is far from slow.

A quick 0-60 sprint and was low 6's anyway, which included some DTC intrusion!

I have not rolling roaded the car, don't really need to as it feels like it has doubled the power.

I might need to go to Santa Pod to see what she can now do!
