Review -- just switched RFT's to all seasons

After getting two flats I made this tough decision of moving to regular non run flat all season tires.

I got 4 good year eagle f1 All seasons for half the price of RFT's
immediately i noticed a very comfortable ride, a bricked road in front of the community which would rattle everything in the car felt like a smooth ride.

however the happiness didn't last long when i moved the transmission to sport mode and wanted to drive aggressive.
the ride is still smooth, there is something wrong the car doesn't feel the same at corners that tight feeling is not there anymore the road feel is gone.

I remembered Jeremy clarkson of Top gear talking about the 3 series saying that their suspensions were designed for the run flats.
well now I have made a wrong choice maybe.

will run these tires for 20k and switch back to run flats hopefully the 3g RFT's will be in the market then.

-- Update:
After driving more than 300 mi close to 500 actually and noticing that the tires had low air pressure ( 24 in front and rear )
I pumped it to 32 front and 38 rear, now the car feels like it should and lot of grip in the rain we had today.

drove it downtown thru potholes and definitely ride is better than RFT's at a slight cost of handling which I can live with.

I noticed the same thing. Its really the initial turn-in that you lose you, and maybe some hi-limit cornering. The run flats are just tooo dang much and I needed UHP A/S tires though, so I didnt have a big choice. Its just a bit of turn in though that you can feel it.

What tires did you have before the switch?

All season tires don't perform very well under any conditions. You need to use summer tires when it's warm and snow tires when it's cold. I would have gone with Eagle F1 Asymmetric for summer.

non RFT have softer sidewalls, which contribute to the smoother ride and at the same time take away some of the solid cornering feel (more sidewall flex). on top of that, you went with all seasons instead of high performance summer tires, which have even less cornering performance and absolute grip.

+1

I can't imagine that a set of PS2s won't handle as well as the stock RFTs. I'm planning on swapping to a summer UHP tire as soon as I my RFT Bridgestones are done....ride quality esp. on rough city roads really sucks.

I switched to conventional tires and am not going back.
Like what was said, get a set of summer tires for handling.
My Michelins have a very stiff sidewall.I'm happy with the handling.
An extra load warning came up when I ordered the tires from Tire Rack.
I called and asked what that warning was all about and was told in those tire sizes, the sidewalls are stiffer and that would cause a firmer ride but better than a RF and the Tire Rack rep was right.

+1,000. Should not have gone to A/S. I can't imagine Charlotte getting snow to hang around for more than 12 hours.

All seasons vary as much as any other tire. I've got a set of Bridgestone RE960 all seasons that are simply excellent for turn in response and grip. They also ride at least as stiff as the run flats they replaced.

I went with all seasons because in Colorado our weather changes on the fly. We can have snow in late april and late september. I cant be running snow tires 8 months a year. We can go from 80 degrees to 6" on the ground the next day. Hence, all seasons for me for the April-October months, snow's for November to March.

I wanted to get the re960's but at 19" they only had 275's and a 9" tire might have just been a bit tiny for that.

OP... are your F1's noisy? Every review I read on tirerack says they are very noisy.

I have the toyo proxes 4 and they seem pretty qutie at the moment. They have about 2k on them. The grip is good actually, its just intial turn in and the feeling that the tire wants to kind of roll over on itself when pushed to the max, but the grip is there at least. For what I paid, I think they are very good, especially since I got them in 19's

Do they make an all season RFT that will fit my 3?

I read those reviews too,
these are silent as of day 2, I went to Good years because they were the only tires available for my wheels at that time. rest all had a 2-3 days wait period.

however just saw online that a closeby store has the run flats in stock, too late though if these run 15k to 20k for me I will be happy and get them swapped to RFT's

Of course, all the xDrive models come with RFT all seasons. Just search TireRack for original equipment on an xDrive model, then you can go from there to figure out which specific tire looks good to you.

Running the Yokohama's right now with the stock staggered 18s and loving it so far. They are quiet, they grip well in turns (except for initial bite in) and they look wider than stock sport RFT. I am currently running some +12 H&R spacers in the rear and it looks perfect but I am going to be getting a drop on some KW v1s and I am a little worried that the Yoko's might rub because they have a squarer sidewall than the stock Bridgestone's.

Let me know if you want to see any pics of the Yoko's mounted.

edit: Forgot to mention that I went through the NYC winter snow with the Yoko's and they took it like a champ. (keep in mind I am running an xi)

Thanks so much for the review. I have an xi too. Could you post a few pics. I want to see how they look. I'm sure they look good.

That's a point I'd liek to see in this tread - who's running non-RFTs on sports suspension vs non? I've currently got 4-seasons RFTs on 17" rims on my 2207 335i sedan and they seem to ride more harshly than the staggered 18"s on a 2009 328i coupe with sports suspension that I test drove. Plus they have worse grip... or maybe that's just too much throttle enthusiasm with the twin turbos... http://www.e90post.com/forums/images....gif:confused2
