Bizarre Pothole Incident.

OK, so I was getting onto an on-ramp to the highway. There was this maybe inch and a half deep pothole, maybe a little smaller than a basketball in diameter.

I was doing like 25mph, try to swerve to miss it, but the edge of my front right tire catches it and POPS immediately...

All I hear is "Pssssssssssssssssssssssss" and I was like Oh Sh*t....

I immedately get off at the nearest exit. I was freaking pissed...I check the damage, it was a cut, kind of like a line going down to the rim. I checked the rim, Thank God there was no visible damage, it looked like the tire deformed on impact and protected the wheel.

Now what I am wondering is; why? The pothole wasn't even that big, sure it shook my car and jolted me but in my opinion a tire should be able to withstand much more force than an intermediate pothole. Is it the runflats? Do you think I am going to have alignment/wheel issues now? Apparently if the force was large enough to pop the tire it may have bent the rim? God I hope not.

My fathers car has hit potholes of the same magnitude if not greater and absolutely nothing happened. Granted he has a thicker tire than I, but what gives?

No problem so far, little over 3000 miles. Have to admit with all the threads on RFTs, I have been very cautious. Roads in my area are in pretty good shape. What did you do about the tire?

To add to it, I had a very important interview to be at...so I had my dad come pick up the car and drive it to the dealership. It's being fixed there.

Suddenly I don't feel so safe in this car, knowing how easily a tire could pop. Be careful out there. I have to admit though, it retained almost all of its handling attributes even with a flat tire, but it's in no way fun.

I can't answer about the runflats...but I'm pretty sure that your rim is OK. It sounds like the tire absorbed the worst of it. You can have a tire shop test the rim to see if is 'out of round' on a high speed balance.

Interesting, I always check Craigslist for BMW 335i stuff, and came accross this:

I have 3 good wheels and tires for sale and one bent wheel/flat tire. They have 5,000 miles on them, like new. The tires are the Bridgestone REO-50a Run Flat Tires ($300-$320 each new) and the wheels cost about $600-700 at BMW. They have the TPMS sensors for detecting a flat.

I will sell the set of 4 for $1,000 or as individuals for $350 each.

I hit a piece of messed up messed up freeway and it dented and flattened the front right wheel and tire. That one is a front so it has a 235/40/18 on it and is the only one with curb rash the others are all perfect with 80% tread.

The rears are a 255/35/18 bridgestone rft on the left and a 245/40/18 Dunlop Sport SPT 01 with equal tread left on the right. (I got a flat on just one tire a while back).

Wow, same side of the car too. Perhaps coincedence, perhaps not. Either way, the tire is too delicate. I would ditch the runflats if I had the cash.

My car is completely stock sports package, so its not like I am messing with the rim/suspension setup to make the ride more harsh. I think it's a problem with the tire, the runflats are too delicate or pop as a safety precaution almost...

I just didn't think it was fair for the tire to go that easy on me.
