Hosed on maintanence of US car

the service light came on at 20K km for an oil change, thought I'd give the local dealer a chance to win us over, as we bought the car in the US. Man did we get hosed, $381 for an oil change. Lesson learned I'll take the car to US dealers only from now on. Victoria BMW will never see us again and I do buy parts there for some of my other BMW's . One hundred bucks just to read the key to see if any fault codes tripped , oh and they topped up the washer fluid at $3.75 a liter. At lleast we got a free car wash LOL. The next service will probably be brakes and they are covered with our US maintanence proram. I'm getting so fed up with BMW attitude and hosing Canadians I think this will be my last, so much for the 335D.

That's not really how it works. It has nothing to do with the key. We hook up the diagnostic computer to your car, interrogate fault memory, reset the maintenance light, then clear the fault codes.

i thought bringing in a US car doesnt necessarily mean you get maintenance included. you can validate your warranty but not your maintenance!

I don't know how it is on the west coast, but in the GTA there are more then one mechanic who will do an oil/filter change on a 335i for under $100. If you really want to use a dealership, well, I don't know. Dealerships here are $128 for oil/filter. $249 for oil service (which is a scam).

ctazer - no maintenance on US cars.

There's a set amount of time BMW allows us to do it. That's what BMW pays us, that's what we charge the customer.

I think the cost to read codes is a flat fee, irregardless of the time involved. Likely, the fee goes towards payment of the cost of the equipment as well (or something - who knows??).

What is the difference between oil and filter and the "oil service"?

Oil & filter is exactly what it sounds like, an oil & filter change. Oil service adds an inspection of wearable parts and topping up of all fluids. Oil service is ok if you're completely ignorant on how to maintain your own car, but if you don't mind putting in your own wiper fluid you're probably ok. The real hilarity of the oil service is everything wearable on the car has sensors anyway.

wow, that much extra for a guy to open the hood and check the fluids (which are monitored automatically as you said)?? Its easy to see that they make a killing from their service fees from uneducated or lazy customers. Thanks for the info!

No I imported the car prior to the cluster and recall letter tarrifs imposed by BMW Canada. The problem was my wife took it in so they thought she wasn't able to check the fluids etc. So they did the oil change service, the service manager explains that inculdes checking the tire preesure, fluid levels ,coolant freeze point etc. Pretty redundant considering the car has TPMS and all the other indicators.

Dont go outside to get oil changed, they will hose you after your lease is done with a 10k repair bill 6 mos after you returned the car stating you did not do it at bmw certified place!

Yes. BMWNA can't charge you for getting oil changes somewhere else. Well, they can, but it'd never hold up. Or you could do what I do; do your own oil changes in between when the car asks, and just get a regular change at the dealership (not oil service). ~$150 every 20k isn't so bad.
