Cold morning starts during break in period
I am afraid I am going to stress my engine without too much of an option during its break in period
I live in Montreal...where the months December to March will have morning temperatures ranging from -22 C to 6 C. My single garage is filled with my '71 stingray and HD Fatboy. My new 335 is arriving around end of Dec and it will be sitting outside on the driveway from day 1. Now my commute to work is only 6 miles, hardly enough time to get it nice and hot! And don’t forget I am in the break in period where I want to treat the engine right! What to do? Is there an OEM oil/block heater available? Would that be my solution ? Any recommendations would be appreciated. thanks

the car will warm up in a few minutes..its brand new...seat warmers will kick in less than a min so you won't be cold at all waiting.....let the car idle a couple of mins and keep your revs low until engine gets to normal operating temps...

Just don't go all crazy with the gas pedal befor the car is warmed up. Not sure if this is a good rule of thumb but when I actually get heat in my air vents, then I assume my car is warmed up.

same, I try to let the RPMS fall to about 500-600 range (ie warm idle), or just wait 2 minutes

No block heater available, but you can get an adhesive electric oil pan heater. Search this site as it has been discussed previously.

I thought BMW recommended not to let your car warm up by letting it sit idling, rather keep the revs under 3500rpm until the car warms up.

to me thats just common sense....if you start the car and drive off immediately....no time for oil to circulate....car will definitely get up to normal operating temps much quicker when there is load on the engine...i still prefer to let it idle at least a few mins after a prolonged stop anywhere...
