Great tank, but you can have a nice reef set up for much much cheaper. I had a 45 gal full reef tank that had everything tucked under the stand. Protein skimmer, powerheads, t5's, and led lighting. My nitrates were always close to zero. Though I did use a 5 stage RO/DI as well. Now granted it did not have some of the corals that required metal halide lighting, but I had plenty of great corals.

My setup was easy on maintenance and everything I chose in terms of fish and corals were more on the hardy side. But there are plenty of great options to choose that are not overly difficult to take care of nor expensive. You could have a nice 55 startup for several thousand. But can grow from there.

But if your going all out like the guy above, yeah it's very expensive. But don't let his setup scare you. That is "hardcore" and not needed to have something nice.

My 54 corner was a full on reef with many stonys but I had a chiller and halides. The one thing I rarely used was the skimmer. I could never set the thing up right and one time it siphoned out half the water in my tank over night. Just more trouble than it was worth.

Guessing your skimmer wasn't in sump? Mine will act odd once every blue moon where it will do that, but it will overflow right back into the sump.

I know if I put a brand new filter sock in I'd get that, so I just empty out the skimmer first, and let it go through its PMS moment.

Coast to Coast is in NJ and they make a good tank.

The Nuvo 38 is nice and Deep Blue now has some cool sizes out now.

People in my neighborhood think I'm growing dope. You can see half the house light up purple a 1/4 mile down the road at night.

I always used to joke that it looked like aliens were landing in our living room. Just light beaming out of every window.
