Headlight convertery thingys
I'm off to France in a week or so. The manual says "Get sticky headlighty thingys off your dealer".
I was under the impression that you couldn't stick converters on these headlights? Is there a switch somewhere on my 59 e92 that stops me blinding frenchmen? If not, how much are BMW's evil gummy things? Cheers, Alex. (nothing on BMW's accessories site, no results in the search) |

This thread has a possible answer, but I've not seen anything conclusive.
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...ght+adjustment But if not you can buy sticky things from BMW for xenons. http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...68&hg=63&fg=05 Item 2, one part number for Halogen and one for Xenon |

If you have Xenons - there should be a lever in the light bay. Instructions on how to change mine were in the manual.

As stated, if you have xenons then there is a little "switch".
The manual is fucking useless though and I had to get one of the techs down at Harold Wood to show me how to do it (and even he didn't know until he looked it up on their reference software). I'm not at home right now so I can't post pictures but I will do my best to explain. I take it you know where the headlight access panels are (they're under the bonnet just inside the shut-line. Whip the cover off and you should be able to see the rear of your headlight units and their reflectors. Inside there you should see a white plastic "thing". It looks like a "Y" on its side, so kind of like -< Between the two branches of the Y shape you should be able to see tiny little "thing", it just sits either against the top or bottom branch of the Y shaped piece of plastic. If you gently push forward or backward on the Y shape that little bit that sits inside it should flick from bottom to top. That is your "flick-over". You need to adjust both sides accordingly and the procedure is the same on both sides. From memory for UK driving: N/S - ensure the bit in the middle is at the top of the Y O/S - ensure the bit in the middle is at the bottom of the Y For Euro driving: N/S - ensure the bit in the middle is at the bottom of the Y O/S - ensure the bit in the middle is at the top of the Y Double check that though. |

Xenon posted some photos of the lever locations, not so long ago.

Had I had not been shown how to do this I would never have figured it out. I'm not at home and my digi-cam was stolen when I was burlged so if someone fancies taking a picture of the area in question I will happily highlight the bits in question... |

Just back from france hardly anyone bothers with the stickers I think its more UK hype than anything and the french don't really care. I always carry a set so on the slim chance of a pull you can appologise profusely that you forgot to put them on and produce them from the glove box, got same set I brought 3 years ago!
I used them prior to this once and they was a right PITA to clean off and IIRC I lost one somewhere between calais and Brittany. Out of interest I passed a UK car on the way down this year completey ablaze what a nightmare

Check out the image attached.
The little bit that flicks up and down when you manipulate the white plastic will be between the two white "fingers" of plastic I've marked with arrows. I will try and take a pic tomorrow but I am stuck using my phone as a camera so the quality might not be great. |

I know. Pesky BlackBerry phone. Still, if you find the white plastic bit you're halfway there.

Then I read somewhere (here) that you might need to push quite hard to get it to flick into place etc and I was just a bit wary. I figured I would ask the techs down at HW and they found out for me. It doesnt need a hard push at all, it's a very light touch to get the flickover in either direction. |

It's good to see BMW making life easy for us RHD folks, and not awkward at all.
I got a classic one from Haliwell Jones in Southport where I got the car... Me: "I'm off to france in a few weeks, so how do I change the headlights over as I assume you can't put converter stickers on the Xenons?" Salesman: "Err, you need to get your local dealer to do it for you before you go" *rolls eyes* Last edited by chasealex; 06-14-2010 at 10:57 AM.. |

I've not had a chance to look yet to be honest, but I will be doing tomorrow.
The dealer thing made me laugh though, if I was worried about blinding frenchmen, why would it be OK for me to blind englishmen inbetween getting the headlights switched over and hitting the channel and vise versa? |
