If Audi's slogan is "Truth in Engineering", what would be BMW's slogan?

I just took in my 535i for new tires and a dead daytime running light. I had no idea about the recall so I get a new one too. They also said they are doing some work on my injectors and wastegates and may need to repalce the turbos if they can't fix them. My car is a 2010 model with 30,000 miles. Never had a problem with the engine to date other than some wastegate clanging. Seems like an expensive bill for BMW. Two turbos potentially, new HPFP, and get this, they replace both daylights if one goes bad for some reason.

"Do not replace any components or conduct any further diagnosis. Clear the fault memory."

Seriously. How many times did we see that phrase when we could simply just go online and read any SIB we wanted? It's no wonder they shut that down.

But I saved the visio diagram of the diagnostic tree and it was amazing how many parts of the tree led to clearing faults and waiting to see if they came back, and even threats to the dealership that warranty work will not be approved if they were to replace.

That phrase even appeared on a SIB for the seat belt handler arm. Pretty embarassing. After 4 years of the thing malfunctioning I simply asked my new dealership to replace it as it was still jamming month 46 and 6 apts. later.

This. Absolutely. You can't even get the frickin pump replaced anymore once symptoms start. It takes an all-out failure for them to do anything at all about it. At least in the past they would test it and if it showed signs of weakening, they would replace it. Now they wait until you've achieved limp mode at least once.

i dont believe its a fuel pump problem. i had 2 replaced and still had the problem. i know someone who had the fuel pump replaced and watch his engine catch fire. no thank you before i buy a turbo bmw until there are zero issues with supposed fuel pumps

I brought my car in to the dealer last week to have mud flaps installed. I asked the service writer if my car was applicable for the recall. She said most definitely, however, I would have to schedule a separate appointment for it.

She explained to me that they first have to do the software upgrade. During the software upgrade, the fuel pump is tested. If it doesn't kick on, that indicates to the service technician that it needs to be replaced. Part of the software upgrade tests the fuel pump to make sure it's compatible which is indicative of whether or not it's bad....or could fail. If the fuel pump won't work with the software upgrade - then they replace the fuel pump - but not until the software upgrade has been conducted and the fuel pump is dead in the tank. That's how she explained to me.

She was pretty insistent that I have the work done ASAP. I'm not too keen on that just yet, because of the responses in this thread, and since I've owned the car for a month now and put a couple thousand miles on it, I haven't had a problem. I do notice a lag, but other than that, knock on wood, I haven't had any problems.

Whether or not, what she was saying about how they test the pumps, was a line of bullshit - I cannot say.

Also, I'm a little confused by something here: why are injectors even involved in the recall?

Why are they even going bad in the first place?

I would think that the problem is either or. Either it's a problem with the HPFP, or it's a problem with the injectors. But the fact that in most situations, both are being replaced....seems odd to me. Unless, something in the HPFP is degrading over time and getting caught in the fuel injectors - in which case, I would think the fuel filter would catch it? Am I totally off the wall here?

Multiple independent failures -- there is a recall on certain injectors now, as well as the HPFP. Also, if the high pressure pump fails, it can damage the injectors directly, because of faulty pressure and fuel dribbling out instead of being sprayed properly.

Have you noticed any differences in performance since the replacement?

Mine is in the shop today for the voluntary recall.

I had had no problems. I had a slight long crank - maybe 2 seconds but no adverse performance issues or warning lights.

16K miles. The car was summoned so I took it in.

After months of long cranks and jerky acceleration, I finally took my 2010 335 in for a HPFP replacement (#443).

Wow, should have done this a long time ago. Car acceleration is much improved and it's silky smooth. The 335 actually drives far better than it did when it was new.

Going in next week for the recall. Car still drives great though I was getting the occassional long crank. Interesting that with the cold weather the rough starts are fewer and farther between?

Had this done recently.
All injectors were apparently OK but the fuel pump was replaced with 446
I get an extra 200km per tank! Thats the only difference i noticed. Same butt dyno.

The software was previously done around september last year.

My car was slower since they upgraded the software but didn't change the HDP.
