Yakev724 or e90TiAg335i, are either of you located in SoCal and willing to do this for a small fee, by any chance? I'm terrified of messing with the soldering on such an expensive cluster, but would love to get the white vs red contrast. PM me if we can work something out.

Not sure why tiag and yakevs look so much brighter and whiter than mine in the pics. Do your leds not have a faint greenish hue to it like mine (pics on page 3)? Is it the camera or perhaps the manufacturer sent me a bad batch?
Anyhow i've ordered samples from various sites and think i've finally found one that'll work for me. I'll post pics of another round of before and after shots once I install them. Here's the site if you can't wait.

It just looks like half of yours aren't even on. I assume you tested them after soldering by plugging in just the board and pulling hi-beam so they turn on?

You can order the LEDs I used for $2.55 shipped (set of 20) from the link on the first page. No need to shop around.

Been tinkering at this mod for ages now, I had bought a cheap cluster to practice on etc, but I'm having no joy whatsoever with the m3 needle part. The needles in UK car's are white trimmed in both sides of the needle, and so far I've tried paint, sharpie, red transparent vinyl, and finally the bimmian needles.

So as a last ditch attempt to get this finished, does anyone have a source of m3 needles? An M3 cluster to steal them from is about £250 / $400

Anyone going back to stock and want to sell theirs?

Heeeeeeelllllllllpppppp! Lol

Yep checked all leds before completing. They all work.
These are actually the leds I bought through your link on the first page.

Wow. No idea, sorry.

I went back and ordered something like 200 more from the same place and they've all been perfect.

I'm in the same boat as Nigelo -- having trouble sourcing some M3 needles without having to buy a whole cluster. Is there any chance I could find a junkyard M3 and grab the needles off those? I'm not even sure if that's possible (or legal)...

Has anybody experienced that bigger needles become non-functional due to some reason?
I have bought bimmian needles and after changing them, my upper two needles have stopped working.
I have put oem needles back on but no luck.
No matter what I do, upper two big needles are not working now.
Any help, suggestion?

You pushed too hard on them while installing them. That caused the gears to disengage. You'll need to remove the covers from the white boxes behind the cluster and reseat the worm gear. The covers have two tabs that are melted down in recesses that you have to remove to take the cover off.

Thanks very much.
Really appreciate your input. I have done it many times on many clusters, but this time it happened with bimmian needles.
I had to push hard so that they can sit on metallic needle.
I will give it a go as you explained and will get back.
Cheers.

Looks fairly straightforward / simple to assemble / disassemble

(like doing the lego rear fog light switch mod)

but the LED soldering itself looks tricky.

Soldering the LEDs on the cluster is pretty easy. The smaller ones in the radio and idrive controller...not quite so easy...lol

Just did this mod and it looks awesome. I only did the gauges white, and left the rest red like the M3 Gauges. I also tried something new with the needles. I took off the white paint from the back of the needles, and painted it red. Makes it look really good! It is not blotchy, and the needles look factory.

Looking great.

not quite M3 needles - M5 ones with a bit of modication to the poles that fit over the metal pins. All good though!

What kind of modification you did ?
Is your car pre-LCI of LCI ?

Hi Cypis007

My car's a pre-lci e92 335i. The poles of the M5 needed trimmed shorter (about 5-8mm) and then I took some speaker wire, pulled out the copper and pushed the insulation part inside the poles of each needle- basically shrinking the size of the internal gap for the servo pins of the cluster to fit snugly!
