Winter tires needed in DC?

Currently have Summers on a 335i sedan. Thoughts are appreciated.

yes, unless you plan to leave it parked during snow and ice storms. The summer tires have NO traction whatsoever in winter conditions -- think roller skates on ball bearings on ice.

At the very least, get all season tires. If you HAVE to drive in bad weather, get winter tires.

I live in Richmond and have all seasons on my MOORs and ws60s on my OZ wheels. But I have to get to work regardless of the weather. If you go with just one set, I recommend Conti-DWS

Summers are a no no. I tried last year. I switched to Conti DWS and use them year round and couldn't be happier. 15000 miles on them so far

If you must go out in a snow storm for work then Yes. Other wise when it snows keep the car in and take it easy driving hard with your performance tires on. Thats what i do but still am lookin at winter tires to be on the safe side since these weather people now a days are wrong half the time and might get caught in a snow storm on a simple ride home from work or whatever.

Anyone that does not have winter tires should never drive when there is snow on the ground or a chance of it snowing when he returns home from a trip.

Doing otherwise puts you at risk to damage your car well above what a set os snow tire/wheels would cost you. In addition that individual would put others in jeopardy be it another motorist or pedestrian.

Bottom line get snow tires unless you only plan to drive locally when the roads are dry.

my 2 cents.

PS. An all Season Tire is just another tree season tire.

The thing is if you're gonna dish out the money for an all-season tire for winter, why not just get a winter tire for winter?

Summer tires are useless in any winter conditions, get a set of winter tires and you'll have nothing to worry about.

There's no doubt summer tires are useless on any snowy/slushy/icy roads.

If you live in DC, however, you can probably get by just leaving your summer tires on as you still don't need to drive anyway and can take Metro or a taxi or car service if you really have to go somewhere. If you live in the burbs, get something besides summer tires.

Since last year's snowfall was a 100 year event (probably brought on by my ditching winter tires for all-seasons), I'm sticking with the Conti DWS rubber until 2108 when I'll buy winter tires again for a DC winter.

But do not expect your car to move in any snow with the summer rubber - although my Z3 would achieve 2 mph - but only in reverse.

What he said. I just run 17" rial salerno rims w/ conti DWS year round (~1100 from TireRack when I bought them). There are way too many potholes and otherwise rough terrain where I live (downtown baltimore) to justify rims any larger than 18's.

Do any of you guys know if I'll have a problem running 17-inch style 187s (from my old 2008 335xi coupe which I sold) on my 2010 335i sedan with M-sport?

Nope, they'll fit.
Are you gonna use them as winters?

Summers + snow = just stupid. You'll be posting here how scary it was to drive, how you had no traction and just slid into a sign or parked car, or just spin your tires within a couple weeks after it snows up there.

summers harden up and get 0 traction in snow. I'm in chicago and just got back from a lil joy ride with my blizzak lm60's. The car honestly performs noticeably better than my prior Acura TL-S (fwd) with brand spanking new all seasons. It's that much better.
