iPhone4 e-mails (can't delete)...

...anyone know how to resolve??

E-mails received on the phone however when deleted they just get redelivered next time you check for e-mails.

This is my wifes phone, hasn't been connected to a laptop for months (since hers broke), so can't access iTunes.

Can anything be done from the handset or does iTunes need to be accessed?? If I need iTunes, still interested in a fix, as I'm getting a new whizzy laptop next week so my wife is having me old one.

The Iphone collects them from your email server. Log in to that and delete it there.

I can't access the server, it's held remotely (a pal of mine host my company website & associated e-mails), could it be a setting on there as opposed to the phone/iTunes??

Is the account getting the mail from a POP server or an IMAP server?

If the former then go into Settings/Mail,Contacts,Calendars then choose the offending account, then click on "Advanced" then go to the "Delete from server" setting and then choose the "When removed from Inbox" setting.

If it is an IMAP account then they should be deleted automatically from the server.

Well I don't know the exact answer to you problem but I doubt iTunes has anything to do with it.

If you go in the phones mail settings, depending on the server AOL, Hotmail etc you'll get different settings there; which point to deleting off the sever once deleted from phone etc. Try tweaking a bit.

You say they get redelivered.. do you mean as a new email with a new time stamp or do they just appear as though you never deleted them?

To try to shed more light, it's a POP server (as far as I'm aware), and the options seem to be configured correctly. Here are a couple of screen grabs which may help (let me know if I should really be posting this information on here!!)...

The settings seem the same as mine however my phone has 'mailbox behaviours' for Drafts, Sent & Deleted whereas my wife's phone doesn't. The only differences (apart from hers in newer) is that mine is a 32gb and hers is an 8gb.

Here's a snapshot of mine. The other difference I can see (not pictured) is that my server port is 993. Oh, also on an earlier page, is states 'IMAP Account Information', so maybe not POP after all??

On your advanced screen the top setting implies deleted messages will be removed after one month. What are the other options? Try changing that setting.

I had a lot of problems using POP and it works far better as IMAP as it is always in sync. Unless you have a good reason not to, IMAP should work better for you.

Definitely server then. I had the same issue with my gmail account. No matter what I done with the settings on the iPhones main mail or gmail apps the mail would never be in sync. Logging on to gmail from a PC and browsing through the full settings online fixed the issue on my phone instantly.
