Possible M6 purchase

Not sure how this will go down on an e90 forum but as Steve got away with talking about a 911, I'll try and explain!

Just went to the stealers to get my car booked in to have the various issues seen to and happened to see that they had an '08 M6 with just 2k on the clock for £55k. Now, this one is fully loaded with the rather nice silver/white leather which is extended to the whole of the dash. The list price of this car was £90k and they have agreed a cost to change of just £15k against my 20k mile M3 (basically, either doing the M6 for £50k and giving me £35k for mine or giving me £40k for mine...it's the same).

Now, I know that the M6 will have plenty more depreciating to do but given 55 plate cars are still fetching similar money to '08 M3's, it shouldn't be as bad as what I've lost on the M3.

I took it out for a test drive and it's extremely good...even the gearbox which gets a slating is just fine when it's driven properly (i.e. lifting off before changing gear as you do in any manual). It's more of a cruiser than the M3 but appeared to be much quicker once moving...it sort of suits me better!

So, I guess I just need some more opinion on this. Does anyone have any experience to know if it's a good car and how does the price sound?

Thanks

I'd sell the M3 privately for £40 and spend £40k on an 07 M6 privately that is still in warranty.

The M6 is a animal, with true supercar performance. I'd say go for it.
The only issue I have with it is its large barge like size

Mate, This a forum community place. If you enjoy the banter stay here and continue no matter what the motor.

Still a BMW also mate. A very fine one indeed. It is faster than the E92 M3 in most situations, especially in a straightline.

New M6 due next year or so I believe so prepare to take a large hit when that comes out.

Like Edowen says buy a cheaper 07 one.

Do not go for it mate...you will regret it big time with time to come.

1. Fuel consumption - if you gun it, you will only get about 11mpg, on the Ring, I was getting 6.5mpg on the E60 M5
2. Depreciation - You are going to lose at least 10K in the next 6 months! Older car, new engine coming out next year.
3. M3 offers more head- and leg-room to your passengers than the M6 does
4. Really ponderous car - if you take it to the track; it wallows around even with a drop.
5. M6's maximum torque is reached at high RPMs, you'll have to shift gears a lot, especially when passing.

One good thing about it - it flies in a straight line

Steve A is the man to talk to about the M6. I think he's on holiday just now but back soon.

hi guys newbie here
had no experience of m3 but had m5 and m6
great in a straight line (absolutely ballistic) but bear in mind 10-15 mpg awful 3pt turn with reverse box
although motorway slipways have never been so much fun (think speeds of 120 when in my 335d i'm only touching 85)
big hit depreciation
not very involving
dubious arse end
everyone else knowing you've got a great car but losing money every day
if you want it go for it if unsure stick where you are or go for cheaper one (mid 30's) and put a plate on it
great site by the way
regards charlie

Speedtrap swapped his M5 for an M3 - and he has no regrets. He said the M3 is much more involving and fun to drive

Although very very quick, M5's and M6's feel much much bigger and heavier round the twisties...

I think you have some wise advice there Charles. Welcome to the forum by the way

Palmball... I love the M6, I really do, but it is a bit of a thirsty beast and like others have said, you'll be loosing even more money. £15k to change... basically say good buy to it as soon as the deal is done.

thanks Palmball
I only had the m5 for 1 week when they first came out, had it on order for 3 years after having had e39 m5, but was offered money to change and having lost as much as i have on cars it was an opportunity not to be missed.
must be one of only people in the country to make money on it, sold it to a top dealer and made a couple of grand could have made more if i had sold unregistered but just had to try it.
m6 however slightly confused choice for me at the time, talked into it by the friendly dealer!! still not taken with the looks from the rear or the fidly cup holder!
out of interest
is it still true that the warranty will only cover 10 starts using launch control
-that was what i was told on both cars at the time

I wouldn't bother if I were you as the government are going to spoil all our fun with their latest idiotic idea of reducing speed limits on our rural roads.

Instead why not gor for this mate...

Is that true on all the M cars?!

Seems a bit stupid -

Salesman - Yes sir the M6 has the amazing 'launch control'.

Customer - oh great.

Salesman - You can only use it 10 times though then the warranty is finished.

Customer - Oh (the salesman)

Seriously i would test drive the M6 and see what you think, it will feel heavier than your M3 and will drink petrol like its going out of fashion! The M3 aint no 320D though!

It will lose some serious money over the next 6 months just look how much you can get a almost new M3 at the minute , if you really like it and you can afford it go for it who cares about depreciation

I'm intrigued now - may have a test drive in a M6, would have thought the M3 is overall more involving and rewarding.

Not as quick as yours Helen. Lacking the bottom end also.

Great fun if you wring its neck. But needs that sort of hammering to be quick.

Wasn't thinking of getting one Carlos, just fun trying stuff out eh. Had a good long test drive in a M3 last year, so do a comparison. Haven't had a chat with John at my local BMW dealer for a while either.

Is it right about the M6 mpg though?

Mmm...definately some varied and interesting responses which, thankfully, has made me rethink my potential purchase.

Fact is, I seem to be unable to keep a car for more than a year or so, even one as great as the M3. Some of you may find this strange...others may understand! In many ways, the M6 is an inferior product but it's also an awesome machine and I was actually very impressed after driving it.

But I am now all too aware that the apparent deal on the '08 plate M6 is still just too much money....which I'll basically lose in a year or so. I know that whatever I get I won't keep it for more than a year so buying a nearly new M6 is going to be financial suicide.

Therefore, I've decided to go for different car; an '06 plate M6 still supplied by a main dealer and fully warranted until June 2010. It's still fully loaded (you know...TV, full leather dash, all the options) and has covered just 13k miles. The deal is just £35k...a massive amount less for what is essentially the same as the '08 car but with an extra 10.5k miles.

I'll probably get fed up by the time the year is out and wouldn't be surprised if I find myself back in a DCT equipped M3 again...but at least this time I won't lose over £20k in one year!

I'm going to have another drive of one again at the weekend just to make sure and I'll update when I've made a final decision.

The E92 M3 has no warranty issues with launch control (LC).
The dealship informed me that i can use LC 100 times.
