i need to give my dealer options by next for my 335xi. one thing i can't decide on is the tires.

i'm getting the sports package because I want the sports seats. do I want the performance tires? If I get them, i'll need to get a set of tires for the winter (this will be my only car, and i'll need to be able to do a lot of snow driving). is it worth it with the xi model to have the 2 sets of tires?

and now for my real question, how much will a set of winter tires and wheels really set me back? how much to get them changed twice a year?

i know there are many threads here on the benefits of winter tires, but i haven't seen much on what the xi owners do...

Regardless of if you have the xi or not...The xi will give you the ability to accelerate better, but winter tires will give you the ability to stop better. I reccomend winter tires regardless of xi or an i with all seasons.

As for cost, tirerack is a good place for tires with reasonable prices (depending on what brand you want)

I agree. Snow tires is a neccessity for living in the Northeast. Remember, 4 wheel drive helps to start, winter tires help you stop.

Get Winter Tires and keep the Summers. This way u have the best performance in year-round, especially since u r gonna do a lot of snow driving.

Where in NY are you? If you're in the metro area then you know that winter can be hit or miss. Our winters are almost exactly the same. I decided to keep the all seasons on the car. If you're in the upstate area you might need winter tires, in which case you might want to go for the summer/winter scenario.

i'm juts north of NYC, though i tend to drive upstate and in vermont during the winter. so i'll definitely see snow

people have commented on the winter tires. what about the summer tires? worth it?

and again, how much will it cost me to switch tires 2x a year?

I'm figuring new 17" rims w/ winter tires around $1k-1300ish + w/e your local shop charges for mounting.

You can't use 16" rims on a 335 because the front brake rotors are too large. 17" and larger.

RWD isn't going to cut it driving up mountains in vermont in the middle of winter

You won't get traction with the RWD no matter what other tells you. Get a set of Nokian winter tires for the winter and get the stock rims with summer performance tires.

I think you really have 2 scenarios
1. get the 17"s that come with the sport package (for xi's). Beat them up and then use those wheels the following year to mount a nice set of snows on. That way you can see how the car drives for one season on stock.
2. start saving and order a really nice set of 18" (or even 19") wheels and accompanying set of performance tires. This nice touch will help you customize your car, put your stamp on it, and, give you a new driving experience again after you've gotten used to driving around on stock for a year.

This has always worked for me in the past, I don't really care for stock tires "performance" rated or not. And they always wear really fast. And their usually heavier. So why pay extra when you could buy better ones on your own? Esp if you are going to turn around and have to buy 17"s w/ snows and a new set of 18"s tires (depending on how aggressively you drive and how many miles you put on?)

Just my $.02

Oh also, once you have the summer/winter set up, you're golden. The up front cost looks bad bc of its 4 extra wheels & tires, + mounting/balancing, but as long as you have a place to store them it's just a matter of changing tires in fall/spring. Then you end up getting more thread life out of them since neither set is being used year-round. It makes a difference, esp in the Northeast.

don't have any idea, always change the tires ourselves.. since you will have 8

it's easy to swap out one at a time

Yes, there are 335xi sedans on sale but delivery is in a few weeks. 335xi coupe's won't be available until the Fall.

I've a 328xi and went for the sports package and 18" summer wheels and then bought a set of 17" winter tires/rims and swap them myself. Basically, all season tires are crap, a compromise at best. Use summers and winters if you live anywhere there is snowfall/freezing weather. You can get away with just summers in mild climates.
