I just got a 2007 328xi coupe with 30k miles, and the lifetime average is 17.2mpg. Very low right? Could there be something wrong with the car?
Also, is there a way to reset this counter? Thx |

In my 2007 328xi in Colorado: - Very conservative commuting: 28-29mpg. - Roof rack drops that to 25-26. - Long distance interstate 30-33mpg. - Haven't tracked it yet, but canyon carving drops it to 18 or so... |

I meant the lifetime average, but I guess you can't reset that one as it would defeat the purpose. Resetting the trip average will do the job too. I wish I could get that type of mileage. I'm going to try and see how it does on long trips, since NYC stop and go traffic is not ideal. |

Gotcha - not sure about the lifetime fuel economy counter (is that something only accessible with idrive? - I've been able to reset all FE counters that I found through non-idrive menus. Maybe I need to rtfm...)
Anyway, one thing to consider with my numbers: I live at about 7000ft, and work at about 5000ft. My understanding is that with a fuel injected car, where the ECU measures the exhaust gases and adjusts inputs accordingly, the fuel economy will actually increase (to a point) at the expense of lower power, IF the car starts of slightly overpowered for the specific driving conditions. Of course at some point you start giving it the beans, at which point the fuel consumption goes back up. Note that doesn't apply to carbureted cars, since the fuel input doesn't change, but the combustion is worse (wrong F/A mixture), and so you end up gassing it even more... At 5000ft the O2 content is down by about 17%, and at 7000ft it's down by about 23% from sea level... See here Don't know if the scaling is direct - couldn't find any info about this... |

My drive is 50/50 highway/city, to and from work, but there is little traffic/lights when I drive. 700 miles on odometer so far. Total mpg 23 so far, on the highway with cruise control at 70, 30-32mpg
